Yeah this guy still would’ve been a great NBA player even if he was born a foot shorter. Insane athleticism at that height
His biggest value to the team is his defense which is predicated on the fact that his arms are the length of a football field and he can close out on three point shooters from the paint. He’s good offensively but not some world beater, falls in love with jump shooting like many lower weight bigs. A lot of his points come from rebounds too, which is helped by his height. There are plenty of athletic guards that flame out in the NBA.
Yeah but we’re not expecting him to be born short and only develop to the same mobility and skills he has now. Right now he has those skills despite being that tall. If he trained mostly as a guard with a body that is easier to control, with his work ethic and athleticism I could def see him still be NBA level talent though of course not a generational player like he is now.
His wingspan is also already good for his height which is ridiculous. Even at 6’4” if we keep the ratio of his height to wingspan it’d be like 6’11” which is still solid. Similar build to SGA. Ant Edwards slightly shorter wingspan but same height.
If you’re just keeping everything the same and taking away his height then yeah I agree he’s not in the league. Not what I was trying to say though

Not too crazy if you assume he’d gain proportional body control at a shorter height. He’d be an insane 6’4 guard.
But his basketball skills are only NBA level because he’s twelve feet tall, there’s no reason on earth to say that he’d just happen to develop guard skills so elite that he’d be one of only a couple hundred shorter players in the world that are good enough to make it to the NBA, there’s no basis for it at all, you’re literally just saying “let’s assume that if he was short he’d be one of the most skilled and talented basketball players in the world in that height bracket”.
Wemby is very skilled but he’s very skilled FOR AN INSANELY TALL HUMAN BEING. There’s a bunch of amazing short players in the world with unbelievable ball handling and shooting abilities that never even sniffed the league because of how insanely good at all of it you need to be when you’re short by NBA standards. There’s no way in hell he’d be in the league if he lost a 12-14 inches and that’s not me hating on him, it’s been true about every single massive player that’s ever been in the league and he’s more skilled than they were.
I think you’re underestimating how hard it is to be skilled at that height. To say his basketball skills are only NBA level only because of his height is straight up disrespectful. We all know he is .00001% in height. That’s what sticks out the most. But we’ve seen 7’4” players before - not alot, but we’ve seen them. None of them were even close to his athleticism and fluidity. Expand that to 7 footers in general and you’re left with like a handful of guys at most.
He also has the drive and work ethic that would lead him to be successful. Sure it’s not guaranteed he’d be a great player but it’s not some scorching hot take that we’d project him to be a pretty good player if he was born with all the same talent and aptitude at 6’4”.
Yes many talented people flame out but Wemby is historical levels of talent and height is a part of it, not all of it. It’s what makes him literally have a GOAT potential ceiling but his floor would still be pretty high if we project shorter height == better control of body. Like if Derrick Rose, Westbrook, etc. was the elite of elite in body control at their height Wemby is beyond that at his height.
I would think the same of someone like KD if he was 6’5” instead of a near 7 footer. Would he be one of the greatest scorers of all time and perennial top 5 player for like a decade? Probably not, but he’d likely still be a solid NBA player with his work ethic, skills, and expected coordination improvement with the shorter height to compensate a bit.
