Definitely not as smooth as Wemby or Chet when they first came into the league. But did seem to get a little more into the flow as the game went on. Couple of nice blocks. Assume he will get some decent minutes during the season.

Between Mara, Chet, and hartenstein….. man idk. This is going to be a problem if Mara can keep this up in the regular season.
I don’t think Mara is going to have a lot of impact this season, he is more of a long term replacement for Hartestein.
All my sadness that Okc didn’t get Yaxel has been cured in 1 game. Mara looks like a completely different player from Summer league, slimmed down too.
Cleveland had Gerald Wilkins as their Jordan Stopper, OKC now has Mara as their Wemby stopper history repeats itself …
Players like wemby completely change the landscape of the league. As long as the spurs as even half as serious of a contender as they were last season, any team wanting to play in June is going to have to phase somebody to put on Wemby.
We still don’t even know who is the best type of player to guard him. Situationally at least, strong defensive guards seem to be one of the toughest match ups for him. But Spurs fans would probably know best.
Because I really don’t know if any of Chet, Clingan, Mara, Edey, Kessler are the right type of guys to put on him. I think wemby wins any kaiju battle pretty easily due to his fluidity/guard skills. I almost picture a healthy zion being the perfect player to guard him. Or maybe a Thompson twin? How does Bam do on him?

Man Queen might be the worst defensive big in the league. He has nothing going on in his head on defense the fundamentals look non existent he’s just standing around hoping the ball don’t come towards him or his man

On a less positive note, I really hope screens are enforced better in future seasons. Not really fair as a defensive player if the screener is allowed to put their hands on you, hug, or extend elbows way out to prevent you from moving. So many guys do it, so I’m not singling Mara out (or any particular big). Just something that I feel should be called closer to the letter of the law.

They were all shooting fouls while he was guarding the paint so it’s not ideal since guarding the paint is his main value right now. Learning to defend without fouling is one of those skills that rookie bigs will usually get better at as the season goes though.
