It’s OKC and then everybody else. Knicks and Celtics are my only realistic alternatives. Nuggets and Lakers don’t do enough to support their MVP caliber super star first options/primary ball handlers with contender level help: both are merely named as somewhat contenders for having those #1 options. Anything and everything is on the table when a team is shooting 50% on wide open 3’s in the finals and nearly as well in the previous 3 series. If you want to dismiss the idea that this was an outlier stretch of hot shooting, let’s see them do this during the regular season.

Obviously the Knicks have a chance to repeat, but one rarely points to hot shooting as a reason for contending. If you assume everyone shoots about as well as they would in the regular season, the Knicks aren’t the clear favorite to come out of the East. You seem to be implying that he’s just cheap, but the Knicks payroll in the aughts would beg to differ.

It’s similar to conversations I’ve had with friends of mine in Boston who absolutely hate the new owners because they blame them for being cheap and trading away Jrue and KP last year and now JB, plus letting Al and Kornet walk. Then I’d put the Celtics. They have depth and the contracts to swing a big trade. Most of their roster is under 30 with the exception of Paul George (not a long term piece and a lot of salary to trade for other players), Conley (not an important or long term piece), and Derrick White who is 32. They’re actually a pretty young roster for the guys they are building around, and they’re 2 seasons away from going all in. They’ll be a good regular season team this year, then flip Paul George for other player(s) next summer, and then can spend whatever into the 2nd apron for 2028-29, with the 2029 playoffs having Tatum (31), Pritchard (31), Robinson (31), Queta (29), Scheierman (28), Walsh (25) all in their prime, with Gonzalez at 23yo in year 4, and Cenac at 22 in year 3. Nobody here will be old except White at 34 pushing 35, who will likely still be a decent bench vet by then. They’ll all be right in that range of not too young for the moment and not too old to be washed and I think 2029 is their chance to win a 2nd one, maybe 2028 if they land a home run trade for PG.

Bucks are rebuilding and Warriors seem pretty out of options with an aging roster, agree those teams are super far away.

Nuggets sort of approaching ain’t no way. Jokic is still great but unless they get him other talent and depth, it’s just getting further and further away for them. Going to be increasingly difficult with their cap situation

Lakers it really depends who they put around Luka in the next 3 years. I don’t think they’re contenders this year so we’ll see about 2028 and 2029

Knicks best chance is to repeat this year, because with all the contract situations, they’re not going to have a fun time with roster reconstruction in 2028 and 2029 and their roster is all on the wrong side of 30 after this season.

With Curry and Jokic indicating re-signing, their best hope for an All-NBA player is Mobley if the Cavs fall flat and need to shake things up to duck the 2nd apron, or Franz Wagner for the same reason with the cap situation if you believe he’s an All-NBA type of player.

I think it’s more likely we split PG into 2 pretty good players that fit our system and between them, White, Pritchard, Queta, Robinson, and 1 of the young guys elevating into a starting quality player (my highest hope is Hugo Gonalez turns into a Josh Hart type of 5th starter role player or 6MOY candidate), we just surround Tatum with 6-7 starting quality guys and mow teams down with depth and team-ball like the 2024-25 Pacers. This is something that’s going to take 2-3 years to develop to find those 2 guys to replace George and for one of the young guys to progress to that quality of player, but it could be a path they take.

I feel like the recency bias for the Knicks is pretty out of control. Last year they had a charmed run where they missed all of their toughest playoff matchups (especially Detroit and OKC), they won a distressing number their games from against-all-odds come from behind victories rather than sustained dominance throughout all 4 quarters, and they’re hurtling towards not being able to resign key championship pieces once KAT’s player option kicks in. Meanwhile, the East that they emerged as the unlikely leader of became substantially tougher to the extent that the Knicks aren’t even the obvious best team in the conference following their championship. On top of that, Wemby and everyone on the Spurs is gonna be another year more developed and that much closer to their primes, OKC kept the band together, and the Lakers are a credible threat. The Knicks have basically this season and this season only as the rest of their championship window, and the East is dramatically more competitive than it was last year. They definitely have a shot at repeating but I don’t like their odds any better than I like the Celtics’. I’d put OKC, the Spurs, and Philly all ahead of the Knicks to win this year, and New York basically HAS to win this year before their window closes
