News from Across the Pond: AS Monaco Basket, which won 3 French Leagues and made the Euroleague Final in 2025 has declared bankruptcy and is shutting down
AS Monaco was kicked out of the Euroleague this summer over financial difficulties. Failing to prove it had the financial capability to compete in the 1st division, it was relegated to the 3rd division before it being announced yesterday that it could not provide the prove of funds necessary to continue operating as a professional club, meaning it would be forced to start in the French amateur 5th division, the lowest level of basketball in the country.
Today, it declared bankruptcy.
An attempt by former NBA player Jamal Mashburn to takeover the club, after the club’s previous owner Alexey Fedorychev had his assets frozen in relation under sanctions related to the Russo-Ukrainian war, failed over the summer. Both the French and Monegasque governments intervened in an attempt to keep the club alive, and pay off the accumulated debts to its players (which included former NBAers such as Daniel Theis, Nikola Mirotic, Cory Joseph and Euroleague legend Mike James), however they were not willing to pursue full nationalization of the club, as it was not seen as financially viable.
The statement by the club follows:
Dear Roca Family,
Today is a sad day.
Despite all our efforts, AS Monaco Basket has filed for bankruptcy. The club will now take a break, hoping to find a path to restructuring and, one day, to relaunch the project.
The Roca Team leaves the court undefeated last season in France, having won all the major French trophies.
Over its five Euroleague campaigns, Monaco defeated all the major European powers it faced. The EuroCup triumph in 2021 gave the Principality its first-ever European title in a team sport.
No one can take away what has been built over these 12 years:
three French league titles, four Leaders Cups, two French Cups, one Super Cup, and two Euroleague Final Fours, including one final. A record of victories and trophies that will forever be part of Monaco’s sporting history.
And yet, the greatest achievement has never been a trophy.
It was you!
The Roca Family: unique, passionate, and incredibly loyal. Those thousands of voices, those flags and jerseys, those journeys, that faith. What was created in the stands and around this team far surpasses any victory, however extraordinary, or any title, however prestigious.
This legacy cannot be erased. Nor can the fighting spirit that has always characterized AS Monaco.
The ultimate goal remains to see Monaco reclaim its rightful place, and we can only hope that, as soon as possible, the Roca Team will shine again at the Gaston Médecin arena, that the immense Roca Team flag will once again fly above the stands, and that thousands of voices will once again roar in unison:
DAGHE MUNEGU!
The future of men’s basketball in Monaco now rests in the hands of the ASM Association: its leaders, coaches, youth players, and first team, which plays in Nationale 3.
AS Monaco Basket is passing the torch to them today, with the hope that one day the red and white will return to the highest level.
Until then, what we have built together remains.
Thank you, Roca Family.
