Steph Curry addresses the crowd before the preseason game vs. the Lakers. Talking about Don Nelson, who was his coach in his rookie season with the Warriors, on a night dedicated to Nelson
Classy
Preseason game? Why not a regular game? Or whenever the Mavericks are in town for Nellie night?
Because Nellie lived in Hawaii and loved it and the game was in Hawaii.
i think yesterday’s game was at the Chase center no?
Because announcing you’re wearing a Nellie patch all season makes more sense to do before the season? Also their first Mavs game at home is in December
Mr. Wardell AKA the goat
Feels like they should do this on their home opener in the regular season no? Or a national TV game. Don Nelson is a Warriors staple/legend. His name will always be synonymous with that franchise
This bothered me too. Make it a big night to start the season and bring as many of the We Believe/Run TMC players to the game. They all talk about how much they loved him as a coach and in the blunt roto.
Instead it’s for a relatively empty arena and a game nobody watch. Didn’t seem disrespectful, just incomplete.
The jerseys will have a Don Nelson patch on them this season if it’s any consolation.
I like the patch. Works well with the jersey.
Yeah, I thought the same thing when it popped up on my Instagram feed. I don’t think they did theme nights let alone memorial nights during any preseason games cause they’re so irrelevant. I get the Warriors are a tentpole franchise now and are juggling a lot more plates than they were 15-20 years ago but you couldn’t dedicate any early season, weeknight games to one of the guys who helped make it a tentpole franchise?
It looks like they brought in Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, at least (and Chris Mullin was there but I feel like he’s always there since I think he still works for the team in some capacity?) but yeah, it definitely feels like more should/could have been done.
Honestly, stuff like this just reminds me that even after the four championships, there’s still some bits of pre 2012 Warriors stank/incompetency left in the franchise. Celtics or Lakers would never give not give someone as important to their franchise as Nellie as to the Warriors a regular season tribute night IMO.
Nellie lived in Hawaii and loved it. He probably would have liked that this happened in his adopted state.
Yeah that is kinda bothering
WAR DELL
DAR WELL
ššššš
also Donnie is an NBA goat
Donnie is the son. Don aka Nellie is the father. And a legend.. Donnie has also done some interesting stuff, but he is not in the same tier
Love the Valks shout out.
Whereās monte Ellis?
A Preseason game? We talkin bout practice??
Why not honor him in a regular game? Or whenever the Mavericks are in town for Nellie night?
Well done Steph. RIP Don Nelson. What a crazy in the good way guy.
what up big fella
so inspirational
that jersey patch is diabolical
Why is it diabolical?
Zoomers using words they donāt understand
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/diabolical
Itās in Cambridge, suck it
Because it clashes completely with the Warriors color scheme. Lime green on a white with blue and yellow? Blech.
That is a sponsor patch. The one for Don is above it in yellow and says āNellieā
Shout out to anybody that attended the Don Nelson Summer Basketball Camp in New Hampshire in the 90s.
Still remember that last game of the season when Don Nelson was head coach, Curry was a rookie. They only had 7 players dressed to play and most of them them was already injured. Don Nelson had a roster shortage in the game, attempting to keep a fouled out Devean George on the floor because he only had active players left who were injured. So all the injured guys had to go in and them foul and say they got injured so then Devean George can come back in.
The Nellie patch is great but that sponsor patch looks hideous.
Glad they could show clips of the game during the 2.5 hour video podcast the broadcasters put on last night.
bandwagon Kerr fans act like Kerr invented small ball but he aint even the first Warriors coach to do it
With inspiration from Auerbach:
āIt all happened in the Celtic practices. What Auerbach would do when it got to midseason and practices were drudgery, was he would play big guys against the small guys and the smalls would always win. You put Bill Russell on the other team and everybody else big, and put the smalls on the other and it wasnāt a close game as long as it was a full-court game. Now half-court you couldnāt do that. But full-court, the smalls always won, so Iām sure that was the start of it.
āI could never understand why small players could never rebound and big players couldnāt dribble. They can. They just donāt do it. But in practice big guys can dribble and do a lot of things. Guys like Magic Johnson proved that ā 6-8 point guard ā that it could happen if they believe they can do it. So I always asked my small guys to be rebounders and my big guys to handle the ball and dribble and get into the open court and feel comfortable there.
āI think it all started from those practices. Of course, it didnāt hurt that we had John Havlicek on our side in small ball. But the big guys couldnāt get the ball up the court. It was always like 10-2 ā small guys always won.ā
I don’t get it. Whose team did Bill Russell play for. Smalls or bigs ?
Why would Russell be on any team other than the bigs? He obviously played center and many of the years Nelson was on the Celtics, Russell was their tallest player.
Balanced out by you acting like Kerr is the devil
Matt barnes and sjax, two of the gooniest goons the league has ever seen
Donāt like them two either but what do they gotta do wit this post or don nelson ?
Barnes and Jackson were part of the We Believe warriors team under Nelson
They both played for the We Believe Warriors and were courtside along with Chris Mullin to honor Don Nelson.
I love them, they were shown sitting courtside in the clip. Not sure what youāre talkin about bud
