JJ Redick on Luka Doncic’s shape: “He’s great physically. The guy worked his butt off all summer on staying in shape and actually ran this summer. He actually did sprints and stuff and came into camp in fantastic shape”. Doncic is reportedly back at his rookie weight.
Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick praised Luka Doncic’s conditioning after the Slovenian superstar opened the preseason with 21 points in a 127-103 win over the Sacramento Kings.
Doncic also added two rebounds, three assists, and two steals in 16 minutes.
“He’s great physically. The guy worked his butt off all summer on staying in shape and actually ran this summer,” Redick said. “He actually did sprints and stuff and came into camp in fantastic shape.”
Redick revealed that Doncic intentionally played less live basketball than usual during the offseason, focusing instead on his physical preparation.
“For someone who normally plays a ton of live basketball, he didn’t do as much of that this summer by design,” the coach explained. “We’ve seen him literally every day in camp just incrementally get more and more in rhythm.
“So throughout this preseason, that’s the goal for all the guys, but particularly for him, continue to build that game shape and continue to build his offensive rhythm.”
Doncic is reportedly back at his rookie weight.
Despite cutting down on live basketball during the summer, Redick said Doncic has been eager to get back into competitive action since training camp began.
“Luka, he’s many good things. He’s not really a drill guy in practice,” Redick said. “Whenever practice starts, he just kind of asks, ‘Are we playing live today? When is live? When is live?’
“He just wants to play. He likes the competition. He likes the way live action looks and feels to him.
“He just has a real joy for playing the actual game of basketball,” Redick continued. “He certainly works on his game; the guy works every single day on his game. But that’s his joy, playing live basketball. So I thought he was really good tonight.”
