No, I’m happy for Melo getting a chance to compete on an actual playoff team instead of sticking for another 3-4 years of rebuild. We got a nice squad coming-up.
We played at a 55 win pace last year. If LaMelo and Miller didn’t miss the start of the season, we would’ve been firmly in the playoffs.
The problem with building around LaMelo is his health. We would’ve been good, but all it takes is one injury that’s historically likely to happen to derail any future success.
The wolves can take that chance, they have Ant. If we took that chance, we’d risk ending up like the wizards in the 2010’s if it didn’t work out.

It is important to remember that the Hornets didn’t have Anthony Edward’s though. LaMelo was an amazing #2 option, but he never quite reached #1 option level even when healthy (and his lack of health was the main reason he was traded).
LaMelo’s the incredibly rare type of playmaker that can rack up assists without dominating the ball. His passing is Jokic-esque in that way. Ant + Melo is gonna be out of this world!
His 3 healthy seasons he got us to the play-in. It’s more that we never gave him a proper Option 2

I also have no trust in him playing the whole season, so I’m not too torn up about it. I’d feel much worse tho if LaMelo ends up playing 70+ games, makes an All-NBA team, and the Wolves end up making the Finals.
So I guess we’ll see.
It was a good trade for us. We wouldn’t be able to fit in his extension in two years so we’d lose him in FA for nothing. This was the first season he wasn’t considered a negative asset and we sold high. He’s just not worth the massive salary hit, plus recurring injury issues (only available for 57% of games the previous three seasons). He spent most of last season on a minute restrictions. The plan looks to be to build around Miller and Kon and we have a massive trove of picks available for trades to upgrade the roster.
He’s a super fun player and I wish him the best.

Yeah, but that also came more from necessity than it being what they envisioned per se. Plugged some holes (Mike’s regression, even if expected, was a bit more pronounced than ideal, Rob not being serviceable, for instance).
That said, learning some Point Guard duties didn’t make him a worse player, surely helped him see the game in a new light, but yeah, hindered what the team as a whole would be able to do last couple years in terms of what’s optimal and what’s not, on top of having no gas for defense a lot of the time

The biggest concern from the talking heads (Bill Simmons, Lowe, Goldsberry, etc.) isn’t so much the talent but the fact that Melo can’t seem to stay healthy. They don’t think Melo’s body can withstand a regular season plus four intense physical playoff series.
It’s a legitimate thing to be skeptical about, so I get it. But the Wolves have a really good medical staff and there were some non-health related circumstances LaMelo was held out of games. So it’s not unreasonable for Minnesota to bet on an improvement and more LaMelo availability.
They might be wrong and regret it! But it’s not an unreasonable bet.
He played 72 games last season, so that’s a good sign at least

Yeah this is the only argument I can see against Ball and the only justification for trading him. He legit has All-NBA potential (and probably had a small case last year) but if you’re only playing 50 games a year, hard to commit to a player for the max.

The most important part of this sequence is that Melo grabbed the rebound and immediately got it to Edwards who was at the half court line already. Didn’t convert into a fast break, since it’s 4 minutes into the 1st quarter of a preseason game; but him constantly doing that really was the key for setting the pace. He was 3rd in DRB% for PGs behind only Luka and Giddey.
He did this a few times tonight! Even threw a lob across the court into Kuminga’s hands so fast that Kuminga wasn’t fully ready (but was close!)
We haven’t had a PG who could do that in a long long time
