Charania on Karl-Anthony Towns’ contract situation with the Knicks: “This is a growing cloud around the New York Knicks. So far, these sides are not close”
So glad that my team isn’t on the public side of nasty negotiations anymore
I just wish they’d announce the signing rather than constantly talk about the supposed drama behind the negotiations. Anyways when was the last time a star player actually walked away due to a contract dispute and actually got paid somewhere else?
Shaq I think
Exactly. It’s been almost 30 years since a team let a star walk in free agency.
Jimmy Butler
This is being reported this way on purpose. Towns camp is trying to make this more of a story to create more leverage in the negotiations. Knicks have no reason to offer a max now or even close. If Towns sucks or is much worse this year they can get him for what they are offering now (or less) and if he’s great they can still get him for the max next year. Seems really unlikely he leaves next year despite being offered the max just because he’s mad about this summer. Even Shaq left because of a bigger offer over everything.
They’ll probably agree on something like 220⁄4 or 250⁄5 and ink the deal before the trade deadline.
I would suspect the chasm is pretty wide right now. Assuming 8% annual increases, the 44mil in year 1 of that 200⁄4 extension is only 23% of the cap.
For reference, 55mil in year 1 would be 29% of the cap and a 6mil pay cut from the last year of this current deal. To get to this, it’d be closer to 248⁄4
Seems to me like any deal other than the supermax would basically be a pay cut for KAT. He’ll have to decide if playing for the Knicks is worth getting paid less than the max. Luckily, for the Knicks, they aren’t facing some kind of time crunch like the Pistons with Duren. Of course, you also don’t want this kind of thing lingering into the ‘27 season.
And…THIS is why it’s so hard for teams to repeat in this era…
Dude has two more years, this extension shit is broken.
Not really the case imo.
2019 Raptors: Kawhi/Danny Green left
2020 Lakers: No recovery via short offseason
2021 Bucks: Middleton injury
2022 Warriors: Nothing related to salary, just general decline
2023 Nuggets: fair enough, had to let Bruce Brown walk
2024 Celtics: Tatum Achilles
2025 Thunder: JDub injury
Tatum achilles didnt really impact that series as they were about to go down 3-1. Celtics were impacted more by Porzingus health thing where he couldn’t run to half court without being completely gassed.
Edit: Hauser (sprained ankle) and Jrue (mallet finger on shooting hand) were also injured. Tatum’s injury is bigger had it happened just one game prior, or earlier in game 4.
It’s funny you got downvoted for posting objectively correct information
Because it’s not objectively true. Like the reasons he mentioned are true events but them being the reason the team didn’t repeat is entirely subjective, and in some cases clearly wrong. For example the Celtics were on the verge of going down 3-1 when Tatum tore his Achilles. And had a healthy Tatum somehow gotten them past the Knicks that year they’d have to beat a red-hot Pacers and then a dominant Thunder team.
…the point was that it wasn’t the salary cap
He’s a big reason why they won the chip, as the don’t win it without him and he’s not even asking for the max. To pay him less than OG is bit crazy to considering the added offensive responsibilities they gave KAT during the post season is one of the biggest reasons they won.
there’s a lot of confusion with this contract. the front office is not asking him to take less than OG. the offer was 200 over 4 years - 50m a year. he’d be getting 10+ million more than OG. roughly what wemby is getting on his new contract. i think 55 would be fair considering team building
The FO wants to keep the roster intact. I can’t blame the FO for trying. They will meet somewhere in the middle for sure my guess somewhere around 230-240M range. This just means after this year we are going to have to make tough decisions on guys like Bridges and Hart. OG and Brunson are due for extensions the following year.
There is no cloud, the Knicks just won the championship
They will figure out a deal with KAT, and if they don’t then that’s okay because they just won the championship
I get that this is just typical reporting and probably some input from Towns’ camp on this bit, but the “growing cloud around the Knicks” phrase this soon comes off as salacious and unnecessary.
Like, its the type of phrase I’d offer up in a Jimmy Butler situation where contract talks aren’t going well so you know he’s about to go make it everyone else’s problem– players, coaches, ballboys and spouses included.
They’ll probably get a deal done to stay together in time and if they don’t, there’s probably not gonna be too much drama around it. Pay that man though, he earned it.
Lmao get this fraud reporter off the front page, this the same guy who reported no punishments were to be made on the clippers and wer supposed to believe this BS? 😂😂 a deal will get done, this knicks FO has been the most tight lipped in the entire NBA. Im sure as hell this fraudster has 0 inside sources. Bring back woj
he doesnt deserve 276 million
This is a league where Austin Reaves is making 45 million a year. MJ’s game 3 ‘98 Jersey just sold at auction for 12 million. You know how much Scottie made that year? 2.7 million. In the year of his 6th title. Dudes are getting PAID
He’s not asking for 276
I suggested $215 million
212 to keep it nyc
In this era of inflated contracts I’d say it’s fair for the second in command of the biggest market team in the entire league. Who just won a ring no less.
If Jalen Duren gets 200 then KAT can get 276
You can’t win with two players taking 70% of the cap no matter who you are
What if it’s prime LeBron with prime LeBron? Passing to each other and running PNR with each other
Duren is over 5 years, 40m per. 276m is 69m per year. Not even close.
The second in command for a big market should be the highest paid player in the NBA?
just because you are eligible for 276….doesnt mean you deserve 276. kAT should get 215 million MAXIMUM
Found Dolan’s burner
He isn’t asking for 276M just not 200M.
215 millie…
.take it or leave it
No he isn’t. Kat said he’s willing to take less than the max.
I for one will enjoy watching some toxic negotiations from the sidelines this time
I wouldn’t give it to him. Highly doubtful they repeat again and we all should know by now it’s a business there’s no loyalty in this league. I think 200 is fair.
Around 220⁄4 and under is what helps the Knicks stay under the second apron to keep the team together. 276⁄4 is KAT’s starting point and 200⁄4 is Knicks starting point. Messy.
That’s not his starting point. It was mentioned two times in this video that he is willing to take a pay cut
Not concerned at all a agreement will be reached
“Growing cloud” says reporter as he tries to get clicks and attention by creating a growing cloud.
Not worried. We’ll get a deal done.
I’m sure people will shit on the Knicks for lowballing but KAT isn’t being reasonable if he’s expecting a full on 35% max. He’s been overpaid most of his prime and winning a chip doesn’t really change that fact, he just wasn’t overpaid last year specifically
This is the 8th fan-proclaimed dynasty that’s gonna end after one year. I don’t think this sub is as smart as they think they are
Which fans claimed it was a dynasty?
Dawg I legit have argued with Knicks fans on here who said as such
We want names and links! I mean I can see the occasional fan talking a little sideways but no true fan seriously thinks this is gonna be a cakewalk or dynasty.
Man this is just me but as a Blazers fan I would trade for KAT in a heartbeat. Imagine a front court of Deni-KAT-Clingan with Camara coming off the bench. So much shooting and defence and size. Would be a real problem and then you have the guards there to playmake. Could be such a fun team.
