Chinese fans are way less sensitive about looks than Western fans in general, it’s just culture differences. In here, no matter which sports, if you say, he’s ugly or something similar about a player’s looks, you’d be downvoted to hell. But in China, even a player’s own fans sometimes say he’s ugly but he’s good at ball, and it would just be a normal conversation with comments following like thank god he’s good at ball.

For anyone wondering why he’s doing something goofy like this for the Chinese internet, I lived in China for 10 years and I get why NBA players do it.
Chinese people are absolute NBA fanatics. It’s the most popular sport in the country by a mile and people are obsessed with it.
Regular season games are on TV all the time. Every NBA playoff game is broadcast live and they’re on TVs everywhere. 500 million people tuned in the first time Yi Jianlian played against Yao Ming.
Around 2010 I stopped by a little convenience store next to my apartment and the dude in front of me in line was wearing a red Michael Jordan Bulls uniform and had “Michael” tattooed in huge letters going up his right forearm and “Jordan” tattooed up his left forearm.
Chinese people like basketball.
When guys like Paul George go to China, it’s like when Michael Jackson went anywhere at the height of his fame. They can’t just walk around and go places, they’d be immediately recognized and so many people would swarm over it would become unsafe for them just because of the sheer number of people that would surround them. I get really nervous watching videos of them going to events in the giant malls over there because there are just so many people crammed in there to see them. I’ve been in situations like that in China and it’s scary even if nothing is going wrong because if something does go wrong people are going to get trampled to death. It’s crazy.
They’re basically gods over there, and so yeah, when people absolutely adore you and don’t really care about any scandals you’re involved with (Kobe Bryant is probably the most popular player ever in China besides Yao) then you keep them happy by doing a silly little dance on TikTok.

They have weird limited edition releases over the last 10~ years, I remember some of them like they had these Nascar racing type jackets with a whole bunch of different team logos patched on it. They had a run of team jerseys designed like button up baseball shirts before which I thought looked cool.
