the footwork to get balanced on that turnaround while fading right was cleaaan. zero hesitation with the clock bleeding out, cold as hell.
Looked a lot like SGA there
Yeah, the patience to get to the spot without rushing it is straight out of his bag.
Ok so when is okc gonna get him
He got grabbed by his jersey while he was trying to spin
Yep, saw that too. Shame the refs missed it, but the shot still fell.
That move is identical to the one made famous by Penny Hardaway. Great move especially for big guards

My glorious king Keaton Wagler
Just don’t look at the shooting splits
I wouldn’t worry about shooting splits for a rookie in their first preseason game. He got to the line 9 times and showed all the intangibles.
Oh I’m with you. Comment was for the box score watchers lol
His shot looks the same as it did in college. I’d like to see him get to the rim better, but I’m not worried at all about the 3-ball.
Are they still “splits” when it’s just one game? Many have pondered.
In his first preseason game, I’d rather he keep shooting than show signs of being hesitant. We all know he’s a good shooter and it’s just a matter of time for him to find his rhythm.
All I see is the W
First professional game of his life and you’re concerned about splits? Fuck off… Clutch ability is the most important thing you could have
Neither team shot well. Blame those Hawaii rims.
He will slime out the league, sincerely
He’s not a King, he’s a Clipper.
Such a clean shot
That base’s got some Devin Booker to it
Almost looked similar to Penny’s move, no?
Thats what I thought!!! I haven’t seen someone do the Penny that well since him.
Yep, one of his most famous highlights from college is him obliterating some dude with a Hardaway step.
Andrew wiggins did some of this too
Yup! I think Dame has it in his bag too. This is him doing it off a spin the other direction: https://youtu.be/dzGvdrjgVn8?si=moXr9EGuxXghIko8&t=346
Is that a Penny?
I was wondering to myself, “Where have I seen that shot before?” And that’s it! Such a sick move, super hard to adjust to
Wagled all over em, a disgusting act!
Incredible footwork.
Wasn’t there just an entire thread about him being a certified bust? Well damn, which one is it? We need a decision made on this day one of his first preseason.
I just don’t get why people want this kid to fail so badly. Like LAC got punished out the ass so I get why you hate them, but this dude is literally the story of a MyPlayer. Complete unknown, potential redshirt who came out of nowhere with a meteoric rise to the #5 pick. Even if you think he was a stretch to pick at 5, he was undeniably a Top 10 talent coming from nowhere.
Seems like a good kid, apparently works his butt off, and yet everyone wants to shit on him and insist he’s a bust.
He looks like a kid. He’s not very athletic. His game comes off as boring because fundamentals don’t show up in the box scores. He’s not overly charismatic. He’s easy for the casual NBA fan to hate…mainly because they don’t know jack about him or his game.
All of them look like kids because they’re kids lol.
This is all just weird to me. It’s one thing to hate the shitheads of college like Grayson Allen, Shadeur, etc. But this is a kid who literally embodies like the dreams of a hooper, and everyone here is mad because he never dunked in game.
You said it yourself: because he’s on the Clippers.
I have no stake in this race but it’s pre season
I mean he was 3⁄15 from the field and 1⁄11 from 3 in the game lol
Sick game winner though
Just another easy Clippers win
Thats a beauty of a move. Took his time, got to his spot comfortably, and put that up with no hesitation.
Maybe he’s a bust, maybe he’s not, but I’m here for the ride.
I don’t really get the whole bust thing with him. His first SL game was bad, but then the other ones were good. Tonight he shot poorly, but made the biggest shot of the game, displaying great footwork. Got to the line a bunch, had some stocks, and didn’t turn the ball over.
Is it because of the athleticism? I’d rather have the craftiness.
He looked more promising than Darryn Peterson did tonight, IMO.
Summer league and preseason are just low quality reference points. You won’t know if he’s a bust or not for a couple of years. That’s the point, if he had missed that shot would it guarantee he’s a bust? No, so him making it doesn’t mean much either.
Totally fair, and I’m definitely not putting much into it. Just genuinely wondering what the people that think he’s going to be a bust are seeing that I’m not.
To me, he’s a late bloomer prospect that was awesome in college playing in the best conference, has good positional size, high IQ, crafty handle, and is a good passer and shooter. Seems to be a pretty solid baseline for the makings of a good pro.
I think summer league especially as a rookie is about watching how the players process things at an environment closer to the NBA speed over the shot making itself. It’s okay if they look kinda bad but can you see the vision? Year 2 players should be dominating and often play 1-2 games before they’re pulled and it’s a bit of a tell if they’re not dominating (with reasonable exceptions of course)
I agree totally. His game in college looked a lot like this, it’s nothing new. He’s too long and under control to be a bust.
The “bust” narrative started before Summer League, actually. Basically Wagler is an analytics darling. The analytics love him but if you watch the games, then there are some issues noticeable to the eye test. The main thing was getting separation and how that’ll affect his ability to get his own shots. So analytics love him but eye test puts up red flags which is why a lot of people in the draft community predicted he’ll be a bust before he was even drafted. “I just don’t see it with him” is a common phrase about him during the draft process.
Bro hasn’t even played one game. What is this comment
Doesn’t even need the push off
Fuck a pick
For now
Yeah, well, he’s no Lindy Waters.
Oh my…
We’re so back
Good to see shit ain’t change since Illi
Is this in Hawaii?
yeah
I mean stupid question, I can see the logo, but I did not know they were playing there
The Clippers have done preseason games there annually for around a decade
What gave it away?
The franchise
I’m gonna miss him at Illinois
I know it’s just preseason but it’s real ballsy for a rookie to call for an iso down 1 with 18 seconds to go
Harden do that some times, the half-spin step back middy
Problem solver on offense
I-L-L
NBA is back baby!!!
That’s cleas asf
Was his mom there
Hell of a shot Wagler
WAGGIN TAIL!
Baby faced killer
If nothing else I think he’s gonna be a bright spot for the clippers this season
That’s not a turnaround. That was a spin move into a stepback, which the announcer got correct. A turnaround has the turn immediately before the shot without an additional move in between.
that’s my bust of the year!
Turnaround jumper? That’s a penny spin!
Silver forgot to take the one pick that mattered
Call him work release
How do I say his name?
I think he pronounces it like Wogler.
Yes Wog is the correct way to pronounce it
Mogler but with a W
Busta rhymes
You’re supposed to moan it
THAT’S MY ROOK!
Wagler kinda reminds me of Jamal Murray.
Where they both have relatively slow footspeed compared to other guards, but they are skilled enough and have the positional size to make it work.
He pulled out the Penny Hardaway move for game!? Wow
One more missed shot for Austin 3⁄16
Carry to get to his right hand?
1-11 from 3
You basically have to be a top 15 player in the world or the franchise is cooked until youre 30 no pressure buddy
he’s not ready yet for the nba but I can totally see the potential in him
