With the stricter rule, Scottie Barnes gets called for a push-off. If they keep calling it this tightly throughout the season, a few players could be in trouble.
Right when Jaylen Brown gets on my team
If they call it like this, JB might be riding the pine by week 3 lmao
Shai might retire
These calls don’t apply to stars.
Shai will average 9 points a game and be in foul trouble by the end of the 1st quarter.
Shai will still belt to ass your favorite team and you’ll have to look at something else to blame.
okay, settle down.
The belt to ass will at least be watchable good basketball then and not the current shit show slop we get put through during the regular season (and sometimes playoffs)
Shai was getting schooled by Pelle Larson last time we faced. I ain’t scared of no trout that can’t use his arm to push the defender off.
Is that a promise?
At least we have a few other guys. What are you going to do when Tatum fouls out on the sixth possession of the game?
[removed]
Brad knew!!!!!
“Analytically any team that has Jaylen Brown after this rule change is fucked”
-Brad Stevens
He kept Tatum, still fugged
AND HE LET IT HAPPEN!
Except he got PG who is the king of these push offs
James Harden was on my team for the 1.5 years the NBA decided to punish flopping and then left right when they stopped trying to enforce it. True basketball hell at times watching this unfold.
That’s what you get for being a nets fan
Could’ve been worse, at least he’s not a Clippers fan.
This is the real reason JT and JB couldn’t be on the same team anymore, they’d never have any offensive possessions again.
It will only last for 3 weeks into the season
If they enforce them Bron and JB will be coming off the bench lol
Bron doesn’t push off really
I’ve watched Bron his entire career and especially close with us, he definitely does.
Pretty much every guard in the game does this too. Maybe not as much as Shai, but I’ve definitely seen Luka murray steph book mitchel cade and much more do pushoffs at least 2 or 3 times a game if not more.
Lebron doesn’t even extend like that. He’s not gonna limited by this at all lol
dont worry, when shai does it six times in one game they will stop calling it.
Lebron too
Brad Stevens is always playing 4D chess.
You have Lebron tho
He’s made a whole ass career and a shit ton of money doing this stuff it’s crazy it’s why I’ve never liked him as a player. I mean smart on his part but can’t stand to watch it.
As long as they call it on Tatum too
Giannis did it in that same game and they didn’t call it, this rule will collect dust after two weeks
Like when they called travelling 3 times in a row on Jordan Poole, only to never call it again on anyone?
tbf, Jordan Poole sucks. and he travels a lot.
I’ve always thought it was carrying. Poole made the carrying a bit too obvious, so refs started calling against even if it was a dribble style that many nba players get away with
They will call it for one week and then never see it again
I was gonna say by Christmas but yeah 2 weeks is right
indubitably
Inexcessably
Man, INXS rules.
It’s more so the extension, Giannis didn’t
That’s how it’s usually always been
Yeah the push off rule has always been about extending the forearm but I don’t expect people online to understand that at this point
On his podcast, Bron mentions that he wants push offs gone, but he’s ok with “space clearing” moves.
My guess is that he’s ok with shoulder movement (think chicken dance), but not ok with elbow movement.
No, it hasn’t always been about that. Pushing off and initiating contact was called much more strictly 15+ years ago.
Giannis is the master of the little chicken wing space making shove
Certain players and situations it will absolutely not be called.
Giannis didnt extend his arm like Barnes did. Some of yall need to watch the video.
Yea the problem isnt “do we have a rule for that”, it’s “will the rule be enforced from now on?”
I don’t think it will either. The nba feels really inconsistent with their refereeing
I know this isn’t gonna last
It’ll last until a star does it near the end of a game in a way that changes the outcome. Then it’ll go the way of traveling and carrying.
This will never get called outside of a 1st quarter
or it will stop being called because players will stop doing it as egregiously.
Yea just like how no one egregiously flops anymore
They’ll target a few young players and call it a day. Just like how Jordan Poole got targeted when travelling rules were “strengthened”
I hope it does. This not getting called has impacted my enjoyment of the NBA more than anything. I can live with all the gambling shit but please have the on-court product be something we would all recognize as basketball. Anyone who does this strong-arm stuff during pick-up would get called out right away. It’s just a bullshit tactic.
bro is fine with 30 stoppages in the fourth quarter to advertise ai gambling platforms, but draws the line at push offs people have been doing for decades
It’s been getting worse for sure
Remember when they focus on flops at the start of the year and it goes back to normal? Act like you’ve been here before lmao
They always have some MO that lasts exactly 3wks. It sucks they never fully commit and follow through
Flopping, traveling, and push offs need to get reigned in or we’re not even really playing basketball anymore.
The flopping has gotten craazy and it’s starting to resemble soccer, and I mean that in the worst way possible.
My best idea for the NBA that could meaningfully help watchability; a post game review of all games only assessing technical fouls for flopping. Sure, it wouldn’t impact the game real-time but that’s a feature not a bug. It keeps the game flow, doesn’t slow it down but…. Habitual floppers start accumulating techs, the league starts to see who those offenders are, and the players will adapt, especially toward the end of the year when missing games becomes a real possibility. And the kicker? There is no reset for the playoffs… flop all year long? It’s gonna cost your team in crunch time.
Interesting idea but I’d separate the flop counter and technical counter. Assessing a technical after the game doesn’t do anything and if a player is a bench player or not someone who gets techs then they arent going to care about reaching 15 Techs and getting suspended. Id make the flop.counter like 5. After the 5th flop, you are suspended a game.
Personally, I’m not concerned with bench players flopping. I’m concerned with folks like SGA, Brunson. Embiid, Jokic, Harden, etc.. not just occasional floppers, but the guys who do it as part of their regular bag.
When those guys do it, and get MVP and scoring titles, it makes it aspirational for other players to do it too, thus not only hurting a single game but THE GAME of basketball as a whole.
The SGA push off is now taught in youth basketball, I have kids in my 9 year olds league literally doing drills on it during pregame warmups.
It’s an epidemic at every level, and until the NBA makes real consequences against it, it’s only going to get worse as a whole generation is growing up with it as part of their fundamentals.
Yeah not going to hold out hope that this keeps up, but man it is so beautiful to imagine right?
They will call it for about 3-4 weeks lol
And what a fun 3-4 weeks that’ll be 🥲
It’ll cut into my complaining though
I’m sure you can find something else to complain about, that’s what I always do.
Them enforcing things for a few weeks because they know what issues exist with the game before going back to business as usual should only serve to make us all complain even harder.
This would have been a foul in past seasons too. It’s the arm extension that makes it a foul. SGA and Giannis are good at pushing off without extending their arm.
SGA and Giannis definitely extend their arms they just don’t get called. Against the Pacers SGA’s arm may as well have been one of those extension grabber things lol
SGA extends all the time he just doesn’t get called for it
Captosaurus
The last time the NBA actually enforced a point of emphasis past November was… what, hand checking in 05-06?
Yup! Remember when jumping into the defender if they went up laterally was enforced for like a month and a half. That was fun.
Pretty much, the travel/rip through/ offensive grappling lasted like 10 matches each.
The rip through stuck, but that was a rule change that made it a non-shooting foul rather than a point of emphasis around illegal offensive moves.
Also travels off the catch-to-pump-fake-to-drive get called all the time now, just not any other kind of travel. So a bit of that stuck, just in a weird and inconsistent way.
Don’t forget the flopping rule
I would become a watcher again if offensive penalties are called and flopping is addressed.
They’ll randomly bring it back in various clutch situations or playoff games. Won’t call it at all during normal pace of play, but when their whistle can effect the game? Hell yeah
Jb to Philly trade finally makes sense now
76ers got fleeced
so they gonna call it for a few games before abandoning it like the shot fake and jumping into the falling defender?
They did the same thing with the flopping rule lmao. Called a lot of em for like the first 3 games of the season and I stg I haven’t seen it called since
Yes lol. Gonna be gone midseason
Yea, they gonna do it first week of the season and then just completely forget about it
They will hand out some charity kiss foul calls to show they are enforcing rules now and then never do it again.
facts
They’re never going to call any of their little focal points for the duration of the season. Players will keep using it and at the end of the day, the league isn’t willing to ruin a shitload of games fouling all the star players out. They’ll just slowly stop and only call it when the ref needs his over/under to hit or a less popular team is threatening a TV darling in the playoffs.
I mean, regardless of the implications, this is a CLEAR pushoff. I question if they will call this stuff consistently but I would love to see it.
It’s the extension of the arm, Scottie needs to learn to use his shoulder/elbow/chickenwing better
Shoulder bump = legal, fundamental part of basketball for decades
Chicken wing = against the rules, even though everyone here seems to think it’s legal
historically, they will enforce the rule for two weeks
I don’t even know if this will make it that long, too many of their superstars do this constantly. Scottie is a fringe star and this is preseason, so it’s fair game.
I feel like before a couple years ago was always called a foul (guys like Luka, Tatum, Shai were very good at the forearm shiver without extension), but it has become a free for all recently and it is 50⁄50 at best if this gets called (Jalen Brown seems to get away with extending like this all the time)
SGA abused the pacers guards with this
SGA abuses everyone with this.
Show me 3 instances. Cuz i saw him doing a bunch of chicken wing fades - no extension. Mathurin did the same as well. Also they called this an offesive foul plenty of times last year too. The only diff this year is refs have been asked to pay closer attention to it.
Heres two that I found within 30 seconds of reading your reply, that feature full extension and no whistle.
Im sure if I could be bothered to go through the whole games id find more
I mean one of these is more akin to the chicken wing than the full extend which was their point I think
The first one is identical to this scottie barnes play
The first one isn’t really egregious it’s not really a full extension kind of in between the mcollum example and the jb example. The second one was definitely an offensive foul. But pretending he “abused this” all the time is revisionist history
There’s no use, friend. Just let them hate him and enjoy the sub going berserk when they eventually cry about him not getting “push off” calls.
Chicken wing is still illegal
It won’t affect Shai or most of the actually skilled guards much. They have good footwork and know how to drive properly and efficiently while using their off arm/shoulder and jamming their elbow into the defender’s chest. The full arm extension push off for the most part is just an extra icing on the cake to get a bit more space on a snatch back or knocking the defender off balance when blowing past them since they weren’t calling this as a foul. Realistically, this only hurts bad players who had poor footwork and couldn’t get good driving lines or are unable to create any space with their handles. I hope they continue to enforce it.
Shai was all about pushing the defender off and then jumping into his space as the defender tries to get back, because that resulted in a foul. It has become his bread and butter.
The foul focuses full extension. SGA uses the chicken wing which is still legal under the new rule. So Shai will probably be fine. I know because i watch literally all of every thunder game. Not just 30 second long reddit compilations.
It also focuses on the force applied, it’s not just extension. Pushing off hard with a chicken wing is still under the umbrella.
And Shai does a lot of full extension push offs anyway…
How legal is this
If the pacers challenged this it would be upheld.
This was in the playoffs and they let both sides get away with more physicality in the playoffs.
If this were a regular season game Nesmith gets called for a hand check before SGA pushes off and creates space. They were letting them play. They let Nesmith play physical and he gets away with a hand check, so they let SGA get away with a full extension.
They call the foul on Nesmith because as he’s falling his foot hooks SGA’s and trips him, but if that doesn’t happen it’s a no call.
If this is a foul by Nesmith then OKC commits a foul in literally every single defensive possession.
Ya but the spirit of the rule is everyone hates his game
Don’t they do this every pre-season? Proclaim that they’re cracking down on so-and-so, make a few calls showing that they mean business, then it’s forgotten about some time during the actual season?
NBA tradition.
This is an obvious offensive foul and always should have been, it’s been so bizarre to watch offensive players create contact and the defense called for a foul.
Defense shouldn’t have to get out of the way of the offense. The pull through should be an offensive foul as well.
I’m fairly confident this would have been called last year with how much Klay stumbled back
this wont last. players are literally taught and encouraged to push off and dip their shoulder into a defender
Shoulder into a defender and pushing with an extended elbow are 2 different things
they are both push offs. is the rule supposed to be against push offs or “pushing with an extended elbow”? have no idea why people on reddit always seek arguments shits weird asf
Yes, the wording of the rule has “extend” in it. It is quite literally all about extending your arm
if true then i recant my statement
You literally could not play offense if you can’t dip your shoulder. Every play will either be a blocking foul or an offensive foul. You need to lower your shoulder to drive. If you are driving, your body is low. If the defender makes contact your shoulder will hit them. Refs cannot see the lines the players are driving and the lines the defenders are taking perfectly in real time.
“If they keep calling it this tightly.”
They won’t, won’t make it past December.
December is generous
Didn’t make it pass this game
Extending the arm was always the rule. They just have to enforce it.
Lmao you new to the nba? They will call it for one month and then forget it exists.
Well he extends his arm and pushes his defender away aint this a textbook violation whatever the new iteration of the rule is ?
Shai is going to foul out in the 1st game.
They won’t call it if it’s Shai
And players like Shai or Tatum just chicken wing not full extension. Then many people will cry when they called only for some players when they are doing different actions.
Tatum does full extension lol, sga I agree
Probably the offensive players will adapt and the defensive will sell more, then It Will be like last year.
Tatum fully pushes off every time he drives
Can we stop the lies, if shai “pushes off” 7 times a game at least 4 or those are full extensions. He’s your guy but at least just admit, season hasn’t started youre good to admit the truth
Shai rarely extends his arm. And he had 2 offensive fouls in clutch time, last possession type, against pistons and Heat called offensive fouls for example.
Okc is the kind of team that gets called for 5 seconds with back to the basket type of shit or 3 seconds while the other team can park their center and never get that call, like against Denver and Spurs for example.
Show us clips of a single game in his entire career where he pushed off four times with full extensions. This should be easy, you say he’s done it 1000 times.
Ah we’re so back.
Missed the OKC hate - wonder if it’ll be less with no Dorture chamber tho 🥲
Shai doesn’t extend his arm that much. Barnes extended his arm they’re is a difference
Flopping should be next in line to be strictly enforced.
The problem with flopping is the players are too good at it. It needs to be punished by review.
Yeah I think it should be punished post game in a way that can incentivize not flopping. They do a review see obvious flops give you a strike once you have so many you are forced to sit out a game. Boom people will flop way less so as to not get kicked out of future games.
The thing is the more rules there are to enforce, the more flopping there will be. Players will eventually catch on to how moves are called and exaggerate more to get the whistle. Offensively and defensively
They tried that a season or two ago. Said in the off season they were gonna be “cracking down on it” , called it a lot in the first couple games, I distinctly remember Marcus Smart getting called for one and being flabbergasted, but after that, I haven’t seen it called since
Everyone should be thanking the Sixers. As soon as we signed Jaylen Brown I knew this rule was being enforced for the first time in like a decade.
Don’t worry, it’ll last for the first 2 weeks of the regular season and then never again
That’s definitely an offensive foul. It’s always been an offensive foul.
This won’t last lol or else scoring will fall by a decent amount
It won’t last
Please please call this all season. It is obviously a foul that makes defense impossible. Please call this all year.
That’s a big if tho. They’ll probably call it quite a bit at the start, and then slowly stopped doing it as the season goes on.
This will drop every team’s production and the league will go back to normal after a week. Lol
Fully extended arm. That would have been called last season.
Wow! That would be something.
But it won’t last, as usual
Man the skill is lost here. What happened to using your shoulder to create space.
This is a bush league move. Should be called 100% of the time.
I mean, this is a pretty obvious push off
That’s a pretty notable push off, but yeah, half the league is in trouble haha
He left his hand out too long. There are players way cleaner at this. Still should be a foul, but i doubt itll be called “tight” enough to matter for pros like shai, giannis, brunson, etc
You know this will be enforced the first 10 games and then will be allowed again. Same thing that happened with jumping toward the defender without even trying to shoot and getting FT for it.
They’ll call this for like a week and never again
SGa going back to being a role player if they enforce it on him.
It will only get called at the beginning if that
Can we fuckin call Carries and Travels, instead?
We godda start somewhere. I don’t love the traveling either, but if they legit call this shit, as shown here, the nba product is about to get a lot better.
I understand it’s unlikely.
Watched a WNBA game today and EVERY possession was a carry. The like “stutter step” nonsense, hand is on the underside of the ball. They call that shit in highschool. It’s unprofessional as hell in a Pro league.
Nice, players have to actually get good instead of pushing off.
Until it comes time for the anointed ones to be called for it but aren’t
Yeah this is just for show. Like the rule where flopping was a supposed to be a technical foul this will also stop getting called once the regular season starts.
Pushing off has been part of the game forever. One of the biggest plays in the history of the league is a push off lol
Jordan’s shot wasn’t even close to the same level of the push-offs we see today.
Jordan was caressing his whole ass.
Tongue out and everything lmao a true sicko
That photo really highlights just how insane his mobility was. Imagine doing a essentially a step back and having your knee almost touch the floor.
Yeah, make em also stop carrying every dribble while we’re at it.
Go watch Jordan
Not sure how pushing off isn’t physical and part of the game? Travels and flopping should be targeted
It’s a foul. You’re not allowed to just shove guys lol
It’s a bit of an art … eliminating completely will effect every player lol
It’s been a foul forever and is a foul at every other level of basketball. You can’t defend a push off, get it out of here forever please that’s not basketball
It’s definitely just a foul.
Not every, but it’s going to put a serious dent in plenty of players if they hold true to this.
Not sure I’m believing this is happening though. Is this an Onion thing?
You all know they are only calling this like the first week and it’ll go back to business as usual after
It’s a push off.
Insert the back to the future “Hey, I’ve seen this one!” meme.
Hate how inconsistent this is called in the NBA. You have superstars that abuse this move and it barely gets called on them. It affects the tempo and rhythm of the game significantly on who gets away with it lol
I sure hope they do stick with it.
The NHL does this every year… for the first few games, they call the games tight. By playoff time the stars can do whatever they want without any risk of a penalty.
I mean that’s definitely a push off.
This will be like the flopping crackdown or the 3pt forward jump crackdown. A few tough calls early and then it’ll disappear, only to reappear randomly in close games to piss people off
