Jim Pollard now has the earliest triple-double (December 28, 1949) in the Basketball Reference database after a recent update
However, just because it wasn’t “official” doesn’t mean that someone wasn’t counting. Just as Basketball Reference has added many unofficial blocks, steals, and turnovers, we have also found some limited unofficial rebounding numbers such as pollard in that game.
What unofficial source are you using?
Old newspaper clippings!
h/t researcher Tariq Jabbar for with us these findings.
Here’s a link to the newspaper clipping: https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-minneapolis-star/207211876/
Thanks! Sounds like a wild game.

I’ve been saying this. Tired of people sleeping on Jimmy P.
Damn Andy Phillip was filling it up
Statpadder. Meaningless stats. Trust me, I was there.
THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING!!
Nice performance, especially considering the “three cripples missing from the lineup”. Jokic has the luxury of getting most of his triple-doubles with a full compliment of cripples on his team.
Real talk though, Andy Phillip had 5 triple doubles in that one season? Forget Big O, we should talk about Big P!
Andy Phillip, I wasn’t familiar with your game.
And looks like a big jump ahead for first 20-pt triple-double
