Pat Riley? The New York financier?

The actor??

No, no, the guard on the all white Kentucky team in the 60s

They’re either jealous or the person is a huge asshole in order to hate on someone on that level. I’m making an assumption here, but Pat seemed jealous of how Pete would have a lot more skill and showmanship in how he played the game. He’s made comments in the past about Pete’s “flamboyance” making others hate him. Pat had to really try to be in the league where Pete made it seem effortless.

Pat may never admit it, but I believe his hate came from jealousy.

Man was a well known playmaker on the court, and a match maker off the court*

*I don’t actually know how they met, so this is speculation.

That’s a shame. He’s probably got a few years on you though. I’m not sure if education was even a real thing in the 1500s when he grew up.

that was real? I watched the movie. i thought it was bullshit

I don’t think he’s dead. I just haven’t seen him since I left that job for a much better one lol.

Hey at least it was Pistol Pete and not Schwerer Gustav Pete

There’s a pretty good chance I’ll never get to share that story again and have it be relevant to any discussion, so I gotta shoot my shot.

You don’t know what “random” means

He’s an old man, he probably doesn’t have the best memory.

You have never met these kinds of people? They have like two to three stories and they let those stories become their social identity.

Sometimes they need to be drunk. But getting drunk is the excuse to tell their story or joke.

I think what kind of happens is they don’t live the most adventurous lives and they tell the story once and it gets a great reaction so it becomes kind of a default comedic bit/brag.

Selfishly, it can get kind of annoying but if you step out of yourself and let the man tell the story for the umpteenth time you start to enjoy watching the person come alive all over again.

Sounds like it’s the highlight of his life, that an NBA superstar used to bang his wife.

Cus he is old and prolly kinda boring so his only story is about how his wife used to be hot.

Stories like these are what remind you how small the world really is lol.

I see a lot of White Chocolate Jason Williams stories on my IG thread. Pistol Pete was that generations White Chocolate.

He was ahead of his time. His game would translate well into any era, even the 3 point dominant one we’re in now. He’s an all-timer for very good reason. Plus, he fucked Paulie’s wife.

Could be. I haven’t seen that movie since it came out though lol.

I could see Corrdry pulling off the Paulie biopic.

I highly doubt a hundred guys have worked in the same gas station with the same Paulie.

It’s true. I also used to date Paulie’s wife

Damn, she got around.

God forbid a white boy get a lil motion

Im saying Pistol Pete was a master of putting the basketball in the basket similarly to SGA.

Eso si que es

Denver flairs saying this is wild lol

Edit: Bring it on you fucks. I’m ready for your downvotes this season. jokic is a fat flopper and yes SGA foulbaits and even flops a lot, but he actually plays D and doesn’t whine when a call doesn’t go his way. DOWNVOTE ME!

Nah, that’s George Gervin

seems like a lot of athletes have separate personas for the “player” and the “person”. kinda like that story of D Rose thinking Kobe was intense ²⁴⁄₇, but found out he could relax off the court

First, LSU went 3-23 the year before Pete Maravich joined, 14-12 in his rookie year, and 22-10 in his third year (before he went to the NBA).

“Rookie year” lol

And they were just fine the year after he left. 3-23 was an outlier. Those LSU teams were nothing special but were not terrible either. They finished third place in the SEC the year after Pete left.

he still averaged a respectable 0.438 FG% across his three year college career.

43.8% is atrocious for pre-3-point line scoring. For comparison’s sake, the top three scorers on the team the year Pete left shot 55%, 59% and 53%. 80% of the SEC was at 45% or above as a team.

With all of Pete’s numbers, you have to realize it was a completely different era. The pace was absurd, college teams were scoring 110+ with regularity which you almost never see these days. Ole Miss had a player average 40.1 PPG and shoot 47% from the floor. Rick Barry averaged ³⁷⁄₁₈ on 52% shooting his senior season. Calvin Murphy averaged 38 on 44% shooting and wasn’t even a first-team All-American. Look up Austin Carr’s career numbers. All of these guys put up crazy volume (relative to today) and were far more efficient than Pete.

There has only been one player in the 21st century in Division I MBB to average 30+ PPG for a season and it’s a player you’ve probably never heard of. It used to be common.

I mean if he was a winning player atleast one of his teams would be a winning team.

The interviewer’s next question was set up by detailing Pete’s similarities with Bird. The first one was that he’s white.

Maravich’s prime years he was playing for a new expansion team, New Orleans Jazz. It wasn’t put together very well (like most expansion teams). No defense, no depth, never finished above .500

They were below avg offensively because he was too much of a chucker.

[deleted]

Nothing. They do what it takes to win. Different ways to skin a cat my dude

wtf are you talking about? Atlanta went from 35 wins to 31 wins after trading him, new orleans went from 26 to 24, his the very definition of empty stats

I hear you but everything op said also applies to his time at LSU when his dad was his coach. At a certain point a spade is a spade. And I love the guy lol

Atlanta went from 48-34 the year before he got there to 36-46 his rookie year.

He was also playing with Bellamy & Lou Hudson in Atlanta. Like maybe they didn’t have an actual contender ceiling, but Maravich also wasn’t raising their ceiling and wasn’t solo-carrying them to the playoffs.

People forget how god awful expansion teams were in the 70’s and 80’s, really in any sport. It’s only been in the more modern era where a more egalitarian expansion draft can lift a new team up to playoff contention in just a couple/few years…

I mean the commenter you’re replying to did say that Pete would “get slandered so bad” implying that he doesn’t agree with the conclusion, just that people would dog Pete these days and he’s probably right. LeBron gets dogged for switching teams and he won a series at minimum every year but his first with the Cavs.

Not ten fucking games. Not ten. And you wanna say he’s overrated?! That’s the most bullshit thing I’ve heard in 30 years

Sorry, your post just reminded me of this: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=244551770898390&vanity=OfficialCBBReview

The players from that era say he was impossible to guard. He just wasted his good years on the worst franchise in the league. By the time he got some decent teams, his knee injuries ended his career.

Nash was hyper-efficient in an era where that wasn’t appreciated as much as today. Pete was pretty much league-average efficiency, like TMac.

Will you be serious

I read the title wrong I’m dumb

Supposedly, if there was a three-point line when he played in college, he’d have scored almost 60 points per game or something stupid like that.

When you think about it and look at his real stats, you quickly realize it’s nonsense. It would mean that a) he made three times as many threes per game as Steph Curry’s best college season, which is the NCAA record b) almost 90% of his made shots were from outside the hypothetical three-point line (Curry was about ⁵⁰⁄₅₀) c) he either shot more than 42.5% on those long-range shots or he would never miss from close range, which raises even more questions about why he would only ever shoot from deep d) he either drew fouls on deep shots at a higher rate than James Harden, was fouled on non-deep shots at way above hack-a-shaq level, or shot something like 60% on deep shots e) he did not try to play this game in the NBA once it introduced a three-point shot, which he attempted only 15 of in the season he played with a three-point line

You might want to check how plus minus works

that’s not how that works

his career BPM is 0.2

but it didn’t happen very often at all

Pete averaged 25ish ppg most of his NBA career. He was not +30 in most games.

In college he might have a point, but he was not putting up 45-50 night after night in the NBA.

Whoops, brainfart. The Jazz.

He spent 6 seasons with the Jazz and had a below average TS% in 5 of them. He was a talented and entertaining playmaker, but he had a ton of turnovers and wasn’t able to elevate his teammates. The Jazz had one of the worst offenses in the league all 6 years he was there.
