Three-time NBA champion JaVale McGee has officially joined the Shanghai Sharks, putting two longtime NBA veterans on the same CBA roster after the Chinese club also signed guard D’Angelo Russell.
Russell’s move to Shanghai was announced earlier this week after the Memphis Grizzlies waived him on September 25.
Despite both spending time with several of the same NBA franchises, McGee and Russell have never previously been teammates.
Both played for the Lakers, Warriors, and Mavericks, but their stints with those teams came in different seasons.
McGee last played in the NBA during the 2023-24 season with the Sacramento Kings, appearing in 46 games and averaging 4.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 0.4 assists in 7.4 minutes per game.
The 38-year-old center spent the 2025-26 season with the Beijing Ducks after previously playing in Australia and Puerto Rico.
In 26 CBA appearances for Beijing, McGee averaged 11.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.9 assists.
McGee was selected with the No. 18 pick in the 2008 NBA Draft and went on to play 909 regular-season games (343 starts) across 16 seasons, averaging 7.6 points and 5.0 rebounds in 16.1 minutes per game.
His NBA stops included the Washington Wizards, Denver Nuggets, Philadelphia 76ers, Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Phoenix Suns, and Sacramento Kings.
McGee won three NBA championships, capturing back-to-back titles with Golden State in 2017 and 2018 before winning another with the Lakers in 2020
