Because while doing nothing is an option, it’s by far the dumbest of the 3.

Taking the QO guarantees UFA next offseason. Doing nothing means he’s still in the same boat until an agreement is reached, even if that takes 3 years.

That is Duren’s fastest (and dumbest) way to get the unrestricted free agency and be able to sign anywhere he wants next year. It is the easy “out” that the CBA allows for players in this situation if they aren’t happy.

If he doesn’t do that, then he remains a RFA, and Detroit will continue to hold onto his rights with no time limit. So, theoretically, they could basically force his retirement from the NBA out of spite.

If he wants 250 then he would still be better off taking the pistons offer because he literally will not be making more than what he’s being offered for the foreseeable future anyway. He’s not eligible for it from another team.

Thing is he can’t get more in career earnings by rejecting this offer. The only way he gets more is if he gets sign and traded or the Pistons put forward a larger number; even if he goes into next year and plays like a a top 15 player. So I think he and his agency are going to be forced.

From what i heard the salary at the start of free agency was like 170-180, the 190 number is what we ended up with once free agency died down; but reporting around these things are difficult to parse sometimes. This situation is different than Kuminga’s for example(if he played well there was potential for a big increase in career earnings). The only reason he has not to sign is pride. I think greed is a more powerful emotion than pride for most people. His agency would also like a slice of that 200 mill so they’ll probably start getting in his ear to sign if they realize it’s either this or the QO.

I do think he and his agent are praying for a sign and trade or a slightly bigger offer and was happy to let negotiations go for as long as possible knowing the Pistons don’t have a plan w/o Duren it’s why they ended up at 200 million in the first place.
