Defense is the only excuse voters use against him when it’s time for MVP selection. He’s a generation talent for sure…could be bias 🤷🏾♂️
This isn’t football. Being a traffic cone half the game matters. It’s not some little thing.
There is no metric that has Luka as a cone other than “fan” ignorance.
He’s not a cone but it is interesting that Luka is in the top 20 of shots contested per game, he was 17th.
Typically big men are the ones contesting that many shots since they play close to the rim on defense. This tells me that opposing teams/players actively hunt Luka on offense and while his Dfg% isn’t that bad (48%) the fact that he has to contest that many shots per game isn’t an indicator that he was a good defender last season by any means, maybe just slightly worse than average at best.
Any player with a high offensive energy burden is a smart target on defense because even if he plays good defense, it’s a little less that he has available to expend on offense.
Luka, like Harden, can be targeted with attrition

He could be hunted because of his relative lack of defensive prowess or he could be hunted because the best way to reduce his offensive impact is to tire him out defensively.

The Celtics scored below their season average throughout the series. The Mavs lost because nobody other than Luka could consistently score or create shots, and his teammates shot 11% on wide open threes in Boston. 11%.
He didn’t have OG Anonuby making every jumper he took for weeks. So unlike Brunson for instance he couldn’t shoot terribly for multiple games and still win them, as Brunson did going up 2-0 on SA shooting like 35%

He was “decent.” Which is exactly how good his defense has been statistically for most of his career. There’s a reason he’s basically exactly middle of the pack in most defensive stats lol. He’s just fine. It’s insane people legitimately put his defense in Trae Young conversations, someone who is routinely literally 0th percentile defensive player some years in many defensive stats.
People would legit spend 10 minutes watching SAS spew nonsense rather than actually watching some NBA basketball.

His defensive rating last year is almost the same as when he was in Dallas. A point difference to be exact. I get that he has shown glimpses of what a defensive player could do last year but his isolation and shot contest efficiency is still average at best.
It’s just that most of the Lakers, if not all, are really bad in defense that it highlights his defensive prowess more. Not that different from a good offensive player on a bad team.
