It’s very unlikely he’d wanna get rid of the Rangers. They make a shit ton of money. They’re the second most valuable NHL team. They’re probably trying to decouple the two so investors can invest in basketball without being forced to invest in hockey(and vice-versa). When the two teams are bundled together, MSG ends up needing to do kind of a discount that results in the market undervaluing the Rangers.

Edit: yeah from a quick google search, MSG stock trades at a market cap of around 10B. The Knicks alone are valued around the same. The Rangers are valued at an additional ~4B. There’s likely a few “extra” billion in valuation to be found in by letting each team be its own stock entity

Idk how you sell either without selling MSG. There is no reason to give Dolan billions of dollars and then pay him millions in rent per annum.

Also if you look at how they are broken up, the Knicks are way cleaner to be sold, the Rangers side has the other side entities in it.

The local politics of that could potentially back fire on Dolan if he wants to keep the arena.

Penn Station is one if not the most important train station in America and is a mess because of the arena on top of it. Every time MSG’s operating permit is up some local politicians want to remove it to fix the train stations. That doesn’t happen because Dolan lobbies against it but also because evicting the Knicks would not be a winning political move.

If the Knicks no longer own MSG they may eventually leave on their own because their new owner would want its own arena. They could try to take over the space intended for the stalled phase 2 of Hudson yards. That might change the math for politicians on removing MSG. The Rangers have less fans inside the city itself and while Dolan would lobby against losing his arena the owner of the Knicks and new arena might lobby against him to get rid of the competition for concerts and other events.

NY is considering bidding for the 2042 Winter Olympics with ski/downhill events held in lake Placid and indoor ice events held in NYC. If the Knicks were sold soon the new owner could work with that bid to try to get state or city funds for a new arena if they design it with hosting the Olympics in mind.

I think like 4ish Billion. 2nd most in the NHL. So quite far behind but up waaaaay more than what they were even like 5 years ago.

The MTA is not playing ball with Trump’s new plan for the Penn Station renovation and the MTA has a 160 year prepaid lease on Penn Station. Even beyond the lease the new plan doesn’t work unless NJ transit and LIRR are able to come to terms on something called through running and LIRR running its trains into Newark or suburban NJ isn’t something Amtrak can force as a landlord even if it finds a way to rip up the MTA’s current lease.

I think the MTA is going to wait out Trump for 2 years and then go back to the drawing board after to try to figure out how to increase the amount of trains Penn Station can handle from NJ.

Yeah if he sells it’ll just be some other evil prick or a private equity deal that will wring every penny from the fans (more than Dolan already is)

I don’t really follow hockey that much anymore but from what I understand since Leon came along, Dolan’s basically pivoted from mismanaging the Knicks to mismanaging the Rangers.

Dolan fired the previous GM (Jeff Gorton) in the middle of a promising rebuild because he felt like results weren’t coming quick enough and then hired a Steve Mills archetype (Chris Drury). Gorton’s teams were actually good enough to make the ECF twice in 3 years, but the absolute hatchet job that Drury’s done has finally taken its toll and they’ve been dogshit since 2024. Meanwhile Jeff Gorton’s new team (Montreal) went from one of the NHL’s worst teams to the ECF under his management.

I am genuinely terrified for what’s gonna happen to the Knicks once Rose retires, but I’m trying not to think about that now and just enjoy the moment we have.

This would definitely make a sale of either franchise easier, but it also allows them to monetize outside investment since they will both be independently publicly traded. This way they can attract people who want to invest in an NBA team but not the broader business or an NHL team but not the broader business.
