My favorite are the ones that aren’t even close to being able to work contract-wise. Not even going to bother to look, but offhand I would think Detroit would have to send an extra 2-3 players (including actual contributors) to make the math work.

Because he’s an RFA, the base year compensation rules apply to any sign and trade involving Duren. If he signs for 40 million, the team he gets traded to has 40 million incoming. But for Detroit, he counts as 20 million outgoing. So somebody has to have 20 million in open cap space to make it work. Or maybe a third team with a huge trade exception, but I’m not sure if that even works with these rules. I can’t even begin to imagine how AD’s 60 million salary could be moved. The fact is that the RFA process is not conducive to sign and trades, especially if ithe signing team needs players back.

Only way I think they can get a win, at least on paper, is if they move in for a bigger player using additional assets… if they were to land a Jokic/Giannis type player (I know) would be the only way to come out “winning” and justify a trade.

If he takes the qualifying offer (9.5m) the max a team can offer him is 47m a year for 4 years in 27. He’s not a max player, so I’m not sure what he wants unless he just wants out.

I think a team could win a chip with a non shooting big. Problem is this team has 2 starters who can’t shoot for shit in Duren and Ausar. Definitely can’t win with both in the starting lineup

Reed is a really strong back up center. Other than teams that have two starting bigs I don’t think any team has a viable back up plan for losing their starting center right before the season starts.

That being said I don’t think a mix of Collins and Reed at center is that terrible.

Can Ausar combined with Cades positional size keep a lineup with Cade/joe/duncan/Collins afloat defensively?

Even if you just slot Reed into durens spot and you’re running Cade/duncan/ausar/collins/Reed you get better defensively and Collins and Reed are decent enough together to eat up those pick and roll reps.

A quality backup center is a hot commodity in the east right now. I think every contender besides Cavs have immediate need of one.

You are on crack if you think we should trade a 22 year old all star for AD, who will want more money than Duren and will likely continue to deteriorate as he ages

From what I can tell, with the S&T rules about aggregating players combined with Duren’s base year compensation - the only way this could possibly come to fruition is Pistons get AD, send Duren to the Wizards and then also send out Duncan Robinson and John Collins (can’t be traded until December 15 I think) to other team(s). No way to balance the salaries otherwise unless there’s some insane cap maneuvering with niche rules

What’s changed? Isn’t that kind of obvious. One package gets them back a soon to be 23 year old All-NBA center in Duren. The other got them the corpse of Jimmy Butler and like 1 or 2 picks.
