And Brunson lost in the West Finals before that. Shaq got swept out of every round of the playoffs before winning his first. The list goes on and on

I think people will eventually come to view Wemby’s first Finals loss similarly to that 07 Cavs-Spurs series. Obviously the Duncan Spurs had more championship pedigree than the Knicks (not casting shade, it was just their 4th title in 9 seasons and 3rd in 5), but it was also Wemby’s first ever playoff run.
Obviously I’d hoped that Wemby would defy all convention and bring it home on his very first try, but as everyone’s saying, history says you usually gotta lose before you can win. The few exceptions (Magic honestly the only one, off the top of my head), have active tier-1 HOF talent on the team with them (to take nothing away from Magic’s absurd closeout game).

Yeah, for as focused and driven as Wemby is, the finals made it pretty clear that there are levels to this shit. Even one stupid play down the stretch of a close game can be the different between having a chance in a series and calling it a wrap. Luckily for the Spurs, Wemby is the type of guy to be fueled by that.

Most of the people making fun of them would kill for that level of success from their own team. Knicks deserved the title 100% and were the better team. But this is a completely absurd take. Part of playoff and championship success comes down to getting a favorable schedule and the Knicks absolutely got one.
The Knicks played a pretty bad Hawks team that barely squeezed in, followed by a Sixers team who just got off a game 7, followed by a Cavs team that just got off a game 7….followed by a Spurs team that just got off a game 7. They had an enormous rest advantage over every team they played.
That’s not a discredit whatsoever, they deserved to win, and likely would have either way, but they did not have the harder schedule.
