Just to add some context: There used to be over 3.5 million Jewish people in Poland before WW2, and IIRC over a million in the Polish capital, Warsaw. The biggest Jewish community back then, by far (they were about 10% of the total Polish population).

About 90% (some say 96%) of Polish Jewish people who used to live in Poland didn’t survive WW2 and the holocaust, and even many of those who tried to return to their homes in Poland were treated very harshly by the local Polish people - they could never get back to their homes or their stuff; some were even beaten to death by the locals.

In total, over 6 million Jewish people were murdered in the holocaust - from around 9.3 million Jewish people in Europe to barely 3 million - so it means about half of the victims were Jewish people of Polish descent/citizenship.

I was lucky to talk directly to holocaust Jewish survivors over 20 years ago, and I listened to their stories. It was hard, but it was worthwhile, and it teaches you a lot about life and death.
