The DPOY ballot is only three names. The fact that 15 out of 100 voters had him in the top 3 (and 9 had White in the top 3) tells us nothing about how the other 85 voters see him.
The All-Defense team balloting tells us how the 100 voters, collectively, viewed them.
You can make an argument for Scottie, but this is an unconvincing argument because it demonstrates a misunderstanding of voting/math

Reminds me of when people get in a fuss over someone finishing 16th in Ballon d’Or instead of 19th. After the main contenders for most of these sporting awards, the placement separations are usually impacted by just a few people. It’s not worth kicking a fuss over.

look, I probably agree scottie is a better defender, but the dpoy voting was close, all-nba team voting was close, and their teams defenses were close. I don’t think it’s a travesty, is all
It’s a travesty because Scottie had so much more defensive responsibility & had to fill multiple roles over the season.
Spent almost half the year playing at the 5 because Poeltl was injured & his best two defensive teammates were a sophmore & rookie.
He played the most games he’s played in fhe NBA while having those shoes to fill & he did more than what we could’ve hoped for but we know how the media are. Will never forget the media tell us in 2020 that none of our players deserved All Defensive team selection when we were a top two defense in the league but the 76ers got Simmons, Embiid & Thybulle.
Also despite the fact it’s positionless there are voters who still vote on it as if it was positional which is going to be more favorable to a guard in that scenario.

A lot of voters try to keep the defensive teams balanced(ggfff/c), otherwise first team would often just be 5 bigs. Because of this, Scottie got “punished” for being a forward competing against Wemby, Chet, and Gobert.
Derrick White also had insane defensive impact according to analytics. At one point last season, his defensive metrics were as good as Wemby’s(I don’t know if it stayed that high by the end of the season, but there was a post here midseason making note of it).
So you have voters who probably put too much into analytics, who are trying to make 2 “balanced” rosters, and some voters who see the 10 spots being the award with no distinction between teams(iirc Bill Simmons said something along those lines when discussing his end of year awards), and a guy like Scottie falls to the second team.
