Not defending Dolan at all - ultimately he has the controlling decision of everything. But the knicks are nearly 80% publicly owned and he has a fiduciary duty to the share holders.

He’s 100% using the 2nd apron “restrictions” as an excuse to lower luxury tax payments.

Kinda sucks that it sounds like the second apron mandate came from him rather than a front office decision. But at the same time the second apron is pretty reatrictive.

He’s been pretty hands off since hiring Leon. Even with the 2nd apron stuff, I think he’s taking the blame for it to seem like the bad guy when it’s probably the right decision for the team.

Even with all of that said, he can go fuck himself for what he’s done to the team in the past and also for operating MSG like a fascist.

I’m hoping the second apron talk is just posturing, and we selectively go into it for 2 years (avoiding the serious team building penalties). His company bought MSG, Knicks and Rangers for \(1BN in the 90s and the knicks alone are estimated to be \)10BN currently. The monetary penalties are harsh but suck it up.

Dolan has a lot of flaws but not spending money has never been one of them. The second apron is an absolute trap. It would be one thing if these extensions would only take the Knicks into the second apron for a season but KAT, Hart, OG, Mikal are eligible for extensions in the next couple of years and Brunson is going to get his super max.

Dolan previously has been known to spend money, not wisely but spends it nonetheless. However, he isnt the only one that wants to steer clear of the 2nd apron.

this is normal and happened pre second apron. Teams regularly lost players after championships. This is not new.

Every fanbase slowly finding out that when they finally spend on a team it has to almost immediately be broken up.

I don’t think the 2nd apron is funny, but I do take a little solace in the fact that people were scratching their head how contending teams just seemed to give away valuable players for nothing until it happened to them and they did the math and realized this is bullshit.

I got lambasted for saying a year ago the Knicks were going to have to dump Anunoby eventually because of his contract, and was told he was way too valuable. Turns out instead of him, it was just Mitchell Robinson, maybe Hart, and we’ll see what happens with KAT.

The 2nd apron came for the Suns, Bucks, Celtics, Nuggets and Wolves, and now it will come for the Knicks, Thunder and Cavs. There is no escaping the 2nd apron if your team spends on players.
