Dwyane Wade to LeBron James during their first training camp together (2010): “You got all this ice on like you 35”.
Whole time Wade should’ve been taking notes and icing up lol
Can’t ice what doesn’t exist
Wade already has busted knees before the Big 3 era.
Wade had knee problems dating back to his Marquette days getting surgery that he regrets
The fact he was as dominant as he was and played until he was 37 despite boggles my mind.
right its crazy how one of the greats could have just been an injured forgotten player before it even started.
Bron always been ahead of the curve when it comes to his body. I think there was an interview with Carmelo or one of his banana boat crew where he said Bron was eating fruits when he needed a snack in high school while others were still eating junk food.
I know he’s seen as a Wine-o.
I grew up in Akron and while I never saw him in person out at a bar he was kind of notorious for hanging around Akron bars and just drinking water lol.
I mean when was this, cause he was in Akron until he was like 18 lol he wouldn’t have been 21 until a few years in to playing for Cleveland
[deleted]
He got his meniscus removed in 2002 itself, it’s honestly a wonder he remained a dominant force for as long as he played.
Those knees broke down a year or two later
Broke down at Marquette
My favorite pic is still Wade pouring champagne on his knee after they beat the Spurs in 2013
Icing actually does very little for your muscles/joints. It’s mostly analgesic, and can actually delay healing
Icing actually does very little for your muscles/joints
After intense activity, the body floods the joints with blood and nutrients, but bones and ligaments can’t absorb that quickly enough, so ice helps slow the flow down. Also remember that blood has a pump (heart) but lymphs (the drainage) don’t.
Show science of that. The person who came up with icing even redacted it.
He went back on RICE yes. But what I wrote wasn’t about healing. You ice to reduce the pain and bloodflow, then switch to compression sleeves or active recovery for healing (they help lymphs drain). Meaning, ice doesn’t do “very little for your muscles/joints”. It’s still a useful tool, just not the whole process as Dr. Mirkin originally invented.
Why would they show the science of common knowledge? If people are disagreeing with icing, which is commonly accepted as good, then they should be the ones showing the science

LeBron was lowkey not having dwades nonsense here lol
He looks visibly annoyed 😂, what’s a best friend if they don’t get on your nerves every once in a while.
Wade says it’s the cameras. I bet Bron has shit he wants to say but doesn’t want to do it on camera.
Look whos still playing now Wadeeee
D Wade had his meniscus removed in college, it’s a little different.
Shoulda been icing in the womb
That’s more reason to ice them knees lol
Imagine if Wade did this
Shit, I’m nowhere near the level of athlete to be a pro and I’m imagining if I iced like this after my hours long hoop sessions in my late teens and early 20s.
Knees and joints would be thanking you. I have the same regrets – I was the type of dude who played through ankle sprains, strains, and other hand and finger issues.
Now that I’m no longer a spring chicken, I can feel those random aches flaring up out of nowhere lmao
I just talking to my buddy who’s also in his mid 30s about this.
In your late teens / early 20s when you had an injury it was as easy as I’ll just ice every day or 2, keep lifting, and not play basketball for 2 weeks and I’ll be fine.
In your 30s, injuries require an intensive regimen of physical therapy, stretching, icing, and doing just the right amount of activity without over stressing for months, and even then your best bet is 80% of what you were pre-injury.
Naw icing is more for if you need to play two games in one day or three games in a weekend and that type of shit. It can delay healing and recovery so the only reason to do it is for pain and to temporarily stall off inflammation(which your body needs for true recovery)
It doesn’t help that most amateurs are playing on concrete too which just tears up your joints
Well he had his meniscus removed at like 19, so I’m guessing it wouldnt have helped much with the recurring injuries that caused.
Yep, that operation before advances in knowing how to treat knees put a hard cap on his career. Even today, Dwyane Wade is buff and takes care of his physique very well, he most definitely did as a player. But everyone wants the soundbite comment of “haha Dwyane you didnt do what LeBrons doing thats why you retired earlier than him”.
ice doesn’t do as much good once your joints are already toast. Bron understood recovery.
its debatable how much ice even helps in general
You can do this and still get injured.
Lebron have incredible genes.
Crazy how they were drafted in the same year…DWade has been retired for awhile, but Lebron probably has two years left.
Dwyane Wade took care of himself physically, his bad knee operation when he was young put a cap on his career.
Wade played til he was 36 or 37
Was pretty cooked down the stretch though
So were you.
Insane stuff from Bron but tbf it’s worth mentioning Wade is older than Bron. Still incredible longevity
Kobe was retired and dead by the same age LeBron is.
this is a jarring comment
Wasn’t Wade one of the oldest in that draft class?
Wade was also three years older than Bron tbf
LeLongevity
Insane this was 16 years ago and he’s still rollin
LeBron never had a knee injury until the 2025 season when he was 40 which is insane. All those recovery treatments really paid off, plus just have insane genetics probably helps.
To be honest, I think dumb luck plays a role here.
For example, I dislocated my patella in PE when I was 15. And then partially dislocated the other one walking to watch a movie when I was 29.
Okay but are we pretending like ice was going to solve any of Wade’s issues? Everyone rushing to make the same silly joke.
He looks like Wizard MJ with all this ice around his knees.
Clowning your friend for taking care of their body is some 2010 stuff lmao
It’s actually just normal friend shit it’s banter nothing personal lmao
Right? Me and my buddies give each other shit for the most mundane things lol.
Sir this is r/nba (or Reddit in general), the commentors are perfect people who have never put a foot wrong their entire lives, and the athletes they scrutinize are the worst thing since sliced bread. Now if theyre going after Miles Bridges, more power to them, but I always snort when I see Redditors make mild/entirely normal situations into something theyre not.
Lol this is the exact same tone I got from my bros at a bachelor party and we all rented a house together, so they got to see my exact skin care routine. “Why do you use that weird French moisturizer!?”
This dude has never played team sports lol bantering is normal
Bantering is the lightest word for what we actually be saying😂
I’m convinced none of yall have friends
I mean it should still be normal friend stuff to joke around. Reddit and social media have ruined real interactions between people. It’s like you guys want everyone to be boring bots with absolutely no personality or to all have the exact same personality.
It’s two friends joking around. Just like when Kevin Love took a video of LeBron emerging from his hyperbaric chamber and called him a vampire or something like that.
I’ll clown my friend for drinking water if it’s funny enough.
Imagine being this lame
Time to make peeps feel old
This was 16+ years ago. 16 years before this, MJ was still playing baseball.
D Wade has been retired for 7 years already (same draft class as LeBron). Bron’s longevity may never be repeated.
I always forget how far LeBron’s hairline was pushed back in these days😂😂
Ay, where yo birth certificate? 🤨
Just so yall know there’s no evidence icing after games and practices extends an athlete’s career. As usual Bron is diff
I would say it’s more the willingness to spend time and effort doing stuff like this that’s helped him. For example he famously doesn’t partake in a lot of the NBA player lifestyle because he heavily prioritizes sleep which definitely does help
Some of the stuff he does is pretty out there and not necessarily helpful, but the attitude to invest in his body is certainly a major contributor to his longevity.
maybe not directly but theres evidence icing slows down inflammation
A lot of people here keep spewing about how ice doesn’t help, but imma keep listening to my PT and doctor that says icing after exercise helps.
Yeah.. that guy is FOS
Inflammation is also not always a bad thing. It’s a regular body process that became a thing for a reason. Chronic inflammation can be where it gets bad, but overall it’s not very well understood for longevity yet.
Exercise can inflame your joints which sounds bad, but exercise also releases cortisol (the stress hormone) which is a good and necessary part of the process.
Even worse, the psuedoscience multi-billion dollar industry latched onto inflammation as a buzzword in the last few years so there’s a ton of wild claims all over the place and not a lot of real answers.
Trust me
/ random guy on Reddit
Brother, icing has been known for centuries to alleviate swelling, reducing pain levels and aiding in the healing process.
“Not proven”. Brother, its incredibly proven.
inflammation isn’t inherently a bad thing. I mean you can look it up but there is a legitimate debate going on in the medical community about when to ice versus when the increased blood flow will heal the injury faster and when some swelling is good.
Brother, icing has been known for centuries to alleviate swelling
Sure
reducing pain levels
and aiding in the healing process.
Maybe
No
wouldn’t the level of travel and amount of exercise they do which is not close to normal possible by under chronic inflammation, they don’t really get to properly recover and wait like normal people who are studied might and be able to build muscle, they lose a lot of that througout the season
I mean that sounds very reasonable and possible. But many things sound reasonable but are wrong, if the answer is more nuanced or counterintuitive.
I’m certainly in no position to call LeBron of all people an idiot in terms of kinesiology and sports science, when he clearly knows more than me and everybody else here.
But is he exactly correct in this one specific instance? It’s not well understood right now.
My guess is that LeBron is (besides being a genetic marvel) a master of the things that are understood and proven. Which is great sleep habits, tracking his nutrition, and a diverse and purposeful exercise program to find and eliminate weaknesses. And adding ice at times might not be real recovery but it is a real, proven way to temporarily reduce soreness, which he definitely has experienced a lot of.
ding ding ding
We basically know very little about what helps or hurts. We can’t even agree on basic stuff like RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation). But he probably does hundreds of these types of things, and some small fraction of them probably helps and all adds up.
without a doubt, he takes care of his body and these things on the whole, help. but RICE specifically has never had much evidence behind it for anything beyond the short term. Lot of people here talking like Wade would be averaging 20 rn if he was icing. Athletes in general just also get crazy recovery/workout advice, which changes over time depending on the trainer. Yet any criticism of this stuff gets push back bc clearly every athlete knows exactly what they’re doing and why.
his Chicago accent was really kicking in for a second there 😭
LePeerPressure
Haha Bron actually looks annoyed 😂
Bron said he really started lifting and taking care of his body in year 5 in the league
Bron def on some experimental drugs but he also has insane post-game recovery routine (if you seen starting five you know it more than just ice 😂🥶 )
What special pharma does only he have access to? lol
He don’t
Vested interest in longevity(LBJ) vs vested interest in the moment(DW).
This comment section is really proving that a ton of yall have never played sports or had friends in real life.
Oh one thing you can definitely see one guy had a plan to play till he was ‘40 one guy had a plan to play it until he’s 35 and well you can still see the guy playing on 40
All fun and games till you realize that maybe LeBron was onto something with that
Wade always knew tobleron is weak sauce
Doesn’t he know icing slows recovery?
Bron been post game icing knees since 2010 he said. Seems to have helped
This team made it work through great talent and the aggressive defensive scheme, but Wade and James were never such a great combination—particularly after that first year, when Wade started to fall off, the team arguably looked better with James + Bosh + shooters on the floor
Wrong: Wade was insane in the horizontal defending to catch up on shooters during opponents ball movement… offense spacing is much less than half of the game
This is wrong
Bosh was the weak link , if he showed up the first 3 games they would’ve won the 2011 finals
Or if Bron avg 27 and played like the MVP he was.
I thought they were a superteam?
Bosh avg 18 if I’m not mistaken. DWade avg 27 and then two time MVP who was also avg 26 up until that point dropped down to 17.8ppg. Literally everyone held up the superteam bargain but Bron. His defense and effort in the series genuinely might have been worse than his scoring output. They were a superteam until he folded.
LeBron be like a Ugandan Little Leaguer.
