What potential? Usually, a no. 1 overall pick starts with some elite skill like playmaking, size/athleticism, rebounding/defense; with clear potential for developing other parts of their game into fully rounded star players. So you get a bad offensive player to take a ton of shots to improve their efficiency, you make a big man protect the rim against barrages of opponent scorers, you make a bad ball handler bring the ball up - all the while they’re being a clear positive in the part of the game they were already elite at.

Risacher isn’t elite at anything, neither has he shown clear potential to be elite at anything. He could become an elite shooter or ball handler still, but he doesn’t have the strength or athleticism to heavily benefit from a jump like that the same way Giannis or Ant did.

Cam never had season as good as Rischer’s rookie year. Cam reddish best year (those 20 games with Portland in 2022-23), his efficiency was worse, especially from 3.

Quite frankly with hype reddish had, if 2nd year Cam Reddish had stats similar to Rischer’s 2nd year, they narrative would have been much different.

Cam barely shot 40% from the field. Risacher shoots 45-46% from the field and 36% from 3. Increased effort, understanding of defences, bulking up, and getting stronger can help him be a 3&D player. We will see if it works out. Cam’s lack of efficiency held him back a lot.

Cam wasn’t roy runner up. Zacc grew last season and will be on a team where he’s given a longer leash and will have more opportunities.

Risacher’s default position is also Jalen Johnson’s default spot and he does a lot of things Dyson Daniels and Nickeil Alexander-Walker do well.

Perhaps with Dallas, Risacher could at times play next to Cooper Flagg as well as play behind him. If he gets more burn with the right coach, who knows?

Risacher has a floor of a 2nd unit bench player already unless he regresses somehow. He’s a lengthy defender who is a relatively efficient shooter, that’s a valuable archetype and even if he’s not some crazy great player he’ll have a real NBA role, unlike Reddish.

He’s not really an on-ball defender and the perimeter shot is extremely streaky.

He has role player upside but only if he improves in his weaker areas. The Hawks made the right decision to move on asap.

Being good at defense requires a lot of focus, determination, and hardwork. I’m not saying it can’t happen, but I don’t think he currently has the mental mindset for that.

He was traded for nothing because his value is at an all time low after a poor season and Snyder clearly doesn’t want to use him anymore. He’s had two NBA seasons so far and one of them was a good rookie campaign. Those tools he showed still exist. As I said, he’s not gonna be a star and understandably isn’t being valued as one, but it shouldn’t be that hard to understand why he can become a rotational piece in the future.

Yeah, Wiggins was ROTY and basically had the opposite problem where he had an excellent rookie year, with the negatives seeming to just be “rookie mistake” type flaws that would vault him at least into perennial all star with incremental efficiency improvements and improved team defense. Instead he basically plateaued and didn’t shine until he had a lesser role with reduced expectations.

Facts, AAU gets a lot of shit and there are def problems, but this sub in particular always acts like the Euro development ice is colder. It’s really just ignorance in acting like Europe is as connected as America. France has still yet to put out a PG worth mentioning. Spain and Germany are miles ahead in terms of developing ball handlers.

I think its playing under FIBA rules vs. the NBA. FIBA is a more team-heavy defense kind of game whereas the NBA is one in one star heavy. I would argue that flows to team development and structure as well. In the NBA the onus is more on the player to develop individually.

For what its worth the hawks really believe in the G-league and have invested heavily in it with good results.
