Why do Americans massively watch college kids play basketball in the ncaa when 99% of them are nowhere near close to an nba level and arguably to euroleague level?

The grey cup is an historic competition in canada even though CFL teams are closer to cfb level than to the nfl.

Domestic soccer leagues in Europe usually have a shit ton of supporters even tho the team they support most likely doesn’t even have a single player at an elite level.

You don’t need to have the best players in the world for it to be entertaining and euroleague players are more than good enough to do entertaining basketball.

What European basketball needs to bring more people watching isn’t a better product on the court but around it.

In the short term, you are correct. It will be a minor league. But in success, that doesn’t need to be true whatsoever.

With so many European stars I think they want to pump more money into the league where they play before the NBA, and also have a league where they can play after. Imagine if Giannis retires and goes to play in Europe after. Not saying it will work or is the best idea, but I think that’s the idea. Euroleague needs the marketing/money and the NBA wants to tap into their market and grow even further.

well NBA Europe might provide a better area to be a professional with the instability of the US, if the pay gets similar, the conditions of life are way better. If Europe can catch-up in infrastructure it can boom, but not with 300€ tickets tho, they should aim at regular fans not families if they want to build something serious

Theyre not that different, they stand halfway between a usual european competition and the NBA and doesnt really satisfy nobody enough. Euroleague are the biggest teams in the continent, and they already play other local competitions, euroleague is a money and quality thing. If thats the case, then injecting more money and better players will only improve it.

As of right now, the Euroleague doesnt interest me because its sort of a closed millionaire club with little meritocracy, but its not good enough in terms of quality of play to really be worth it if you’re not a fan of one of the teams. I know theres people who enjoy it anyway, and no disrespect intended but I dont really get why. It stands on an awkward no mans land between the cool local competitions with its own histories and rivalries and cultures, and the absolute best competition that is the NBA.

If it becomes better and more similar to the NBA, I might check it out more often, because then it will be more worth it, also for the NBA connection.

The biggest argument I would see for that is it could grow the sport in Europe. Maybe in 20-30years, basketball would become a real option to football for kids when they grow up, and the talent may match what’s in the USA.

If the biggest league in the world is in the US, and no other league comes close, it doesn’t help growing the sport elsewhere

Fiba is not EuroLeague

It’s surprising at first blush but nba is the predominant basketball league. It’s like if UEFA or PL wanted to partner with an American soccer federation — we’d be excited for the most part.
