Everyone knew the Warriors were a one time situation. Even with deep pockets, no one was worried about that once in a lifetime opportunity to get someone like KD. They didn’t want to be like New Orleans or OKC, unable to keep players because they want to go elsewhere because the team never is able to keep their players. In other words: they didn’t want to look cheap. So they invented a reason that made it look reasonable to trade stars away for financial reasons, which also netted them more say over player movement (dampening player empowerment) and improved bottom lines. All the NFL players would prefer the NBA collective bargaining agreement. The NFL hard cap only works because the NFLPA has not been able to negotiate fully guaranteed contracts into their CBA.

The second apron is forcing parity more than it’s allowing parity if that makes sense. It’s working in the sense that there are different champions, but instead of evening the playing field, it’s moreso just punishing teams who have been able to construct good rosters.

As long as there is no reduction in the players’ share of BRI the NBPA didn’t care and it isn’t clear that they should. Ultimately this only affects the allocation of money between the players, not the amount of money the players as a group receive.

The NBPA employs lawyers and negotiating experts. That is why they are the strongest or second strongest union in US pro sports.

KAT is integral to a championship winning squad and not easily replaceable. An NBA player in 2026 in KAT’s shoes would expect the max. Yet, there have been indications he would be open to taking less than the max. This summer is the start of negotiations in earnest and it’s been reported the Knicks made a low-ish offer. So they have a year to bridge the gap. KAT probably only wants to take a small discount and Knicks are leveraging for more, because every little bit of flexibility is important for roster filling, although not as important as keeping your core. Unless something disastrous happens during this season, I expect them to come to terms with KAT taking a smallish discount.
