Dennis Rodman 0 Points, 21 Rebounds
Definition of know your role, bb iq off the charts
watching this made me miss the old school arena sounds they played. tempo piano and horns to really engage the on-court action. now they play junk pop music to drown you out of the game.
I like the MSG organ
Ev-ree-bah-dee CLAP YO HANDS! 👏👏
Zero buckets. Just glass eating grass fed beef. Board man gets titles.
Remember kids,
Board man gets paid
pretty crazy how there’s at least 2 suns players on the floor that are taller than him at all times and yet he’s dominating them on the boardsgenuinely curious how one can master rebounding to that extent considering it’s extremely luck based
There was this segment with Rodman in The Last Dance where he was shown studying opponents tapes and then he himself stated that he learned ball bounceback patterns and could predict where the ball would go based on the angle and force of the impact.
Like most things in life, luck is just not understanding all of the variables. But above that he also just knew how to use his body to create advantage. Not like he was always exactly where he was supposed to be every time.
I wonder how he’d look these days with so many more threes, which have a lot crazier bounce ranges. Still a monster I’m sure.
Rebounding is absolutely a skill, exactly for the reason you stated. And Rodman was arguably the goat at it.
Probably lower averages if he played higher minutes, but similar if not smaller rate if he was like restricted like 24-36mpg. Think he’d have to do a lot more cardio for each board. Instead, he had to bang around in the post for his era.
It’s not just luck based, it’s positioning, boxing out, and having an extraordinary motor.
Rodman was often making 2 hops and attempts at the ball in the time a taller center jumped and made one attempt on the ball.
There is a dude who wrote a paper floating around the internet on Rodman’s statistal unlikelyness.
Its interesting to say the least.
*Edit found the link to the paper

That’s an incredible piece, thanks for sharing!
considering it’s extremely luck based
Says the guy who can’t rebound.
Helps to have some long ass arms. People didnt have the same understanding of wingspan back in those days
Yeah the focus on height is how people underestimated him. It’s the wingspan and how quick he is to each jump I think
Players like bill Russell or Dennis will tell you its not luck based. Knowing the shooters habits, boxing out, how ball reacts with rotation… great rebounding is an art.
Massive wingspan helps a lot. 7’2+.
It’s not luck at all, it’s geometry. You can tell how a ball is going to bounce off the rim based on the angle and trajectory.
Back when men were men and they let freaks be freaks.
Just a lil nasty at times
the good old days
the interesting thing is that he’s done this 3 more times. like that dude has one job (not really) and he does it really really well.
“The one who controls the rebound controls the game” - from Slam Dunk
the case for Dennis Rodman, amazing paper imo
I urge you all to check it out
Holy shit, you can really so how much better he is at reading the rebound right here. He’s moving towards the rebound while everyone else on the court is still waiting for the ball to hit rim.
edit: you can also see a bunch of clips where he gave up on defense in order to set up for the rebound, lol. Very different from Pistons Rodman
This is my non shooting big in 2k27
If Kawhi is board man what is this guy
Kawhi’s board refers to how many companies he’s involved with
You children still done with the 90s? Rodman would be Wilt Chamberlain in this SOFT league
If he was Lebron’s teammate, LePolymarket would have sent a cryptic passive aggressive messaging through Klutch propaganda arm about how he needs more 3 point shooting for “spacing”
Your BMI > you iq
Why bring LeBron into the conversation? This is about rodman. Go hate somewhere else.
LeObsessed
Didn’t Wemby drop like 40 and 20 on OKC in game 1 WCF? Was Rodman bad at shooting, or did he just not need to shoot because of his teammates and era?
On the pistons he averaged like 10 ppg. On the bulls he just didn’t need to. His shooting % was around 53%. His 3 % was awful but no one really shot them either.
It’s more like any team he was on gained extra possessions because of how many rebounds he got.
He actually led the league in fg percentage one year.
On the Pistons, he didn’t need to score either. There were Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars. And Vinnie off the bench.
Didn’t the best player in the league got 40, 20? Are you comparing an amazing role player to an mvp caliber player?
He COULD score. He just understood other people could score better. His job was to get the ball, and he’s arguably the GOAT at it partly because he focused his energy all on rebounding and defense, not scoring.
Mebounds ? Or naw
Sad to think he’d be like a juiced up Vanderbilt in todays era
vanderbilt has never gotten 20 rebounds in his entire career lmao
Juiced up means better
i know man but it just doesn’t sound right it’s like saying Magic would be a juiced up Josh Giddey or something
Magic’s like a juiced up version of Hali
Inevitably going to get downvoted take of the day: Can you really consider a guy who actively went out of his way to do NOTHING but rebound the greatest rebounder of all time? Like yeah no shit he’s gonna get a bunch of boards if that’s the only thing he’s doing no matter if it’s correct thing to do. Putting up like 24ppg with 12 rebounds to me makes you a better rebounder than someone posting 15 boards but like 6ppg, easy to inflate numbers when it’s all you’re doing.
He averaged 10pts and 19 rebounds one year in Detroit, it’s not like he couldn’t score at all. It just wasn’t his role when he played with ball dominant scorers in an era where defense was basically all iso because of different rules. he was a really good passer and high iq player so he contributed offensively just not by being a first scoring option. he didn’t turn down layups like Ben Simmons.
I think your whole premise here is just wrong about rodman.
Yeah also fwiw most great rebounders were strictly rebounders and defenders so having a guy who acts 18 boards in only 30 minutes makes him one of the greatest.
a player who does nothing but rebound sucks for sure.
In the context of rodman, he was an amazing defender as well.
Well I’m not a massive ball knower but at least in this game he had quite a few good passes that ended up not getting finished and he did try to shoot a few times (just missed all of them). I think in the 90’s when spacing wasn’t as important it was okay to have someone who didn’t shoot a lot play at the elbow or in the paint because it’s not like the Bulls were lacking for scoring options for him to pass to
I think where you’re wrong is that even if it’s literally all you’re trying to do, it’s not easy to be 6’7 and pull down historic numbers of rebounds against NBA bigs.
And it’s not like he was just grabbing a bunch of boards for shit teams in games that didn’t matter. The way he played contributed to victory.
Another thing i noticed was how often rodman was competing against his own teammates for the rebound. I only watched half this video, but there were a handful of times the ball went straight to his teammate but he ripped it out of their hands
On the flip side: Rodman is so good at rebounding that teams don’t care if he doesn’t do anything else.
See how this sort of argument can go either way?
never thought of it like this that’s a pretty good point
That’s not all Dennis did though, he was a phenomenal defender. He went into that role and shined. Jordan and Pippen get the points, he grabs the boards and locks down his man on defense.
