I don’t think any of the players currently on these rosters will ever win MVP, so really any guess would just be a guess.

I mean, it’s either the Pistons or the Pacers if we’re talking about people currently on the rosters.

Both Cade and Haliburton have games that are somewhat atypical for an MVP and I think that they’d only win it if the team had an absolutely dominant season a la the 2015 Warriors. People may not have been around to know, but Steph’s first MVP was very controversial. A lot of people were calling him a “system player” and skeptical that he could actually win in the playoffs. The players’ awards gave it to Harden.

Out of the currsent rosters constructed, I’d say the Pistons (Cade), Pacers (Hali), and Raptors (Scottie) probably have the highest chance of getting their first. I’d probably say Cade has the best chance out of all of them to win one.

Realistically, Pacers and Pistons have the “best” chance due to the fact that they’ve got Hali and Cade who could play up to an MVP-level and carry their team to the 1 seed in the East. Raptors are a wildcard cause Kawhi could be Kawhi and just suddenly play 65+ games and be at an MVP-level in the East.

Pelicans and Grizzlies would most likely get cannibalized by other teams in the west where Wemby/SGA/Luka/whoever else would also have their team fighting for a top seed and having MVP-level seasons.

Nets have no one right now.

Magic have a cluster of dudes but none of them are at the All-NBA level.

Cade less so because he’s got the counting stats for it on a good team but in a world where Shai, Jok’, Wemby, Giannis and Luka exist, there’ll be a lot of deserving people that don’t get the consideration.

I’m giving an edge to the Nets because;

1. tanking

2. in a market big enough that they might have the best chance at getting a guy to stay for their full second contract as opposed to demanding a trade or quiet quitting

3. have a ton of future draft picks

Everyone is all in on Cade, and they’re not wrong to make him the betting favorite. But there’s a universe out there where Hali comes back from injury—maybe this year, maybe next when he’s fully back—and takes that final step from great to unstoppable.

MVP’s aren’t always just pure stats; they’re stories too. And a Pacers squad that rises up over the defending champ Knicks, a 60 win Pistons squad, the superteam Sixers, the mini superteam Cavs, the warhorse Celtics, the Florida frontcourts in Orlando & Miami and the Return of the Klaw Raps would demand recognition for such overachievement.

Pretty bleak for all eight. I think it’s just going to be either “who’s going to win the next Wemby-level #1 overall pick” or “who lucks into a franchise player somewhere in the middle of the draft?” You could maybe, MAYBE argue Cade has a shot eventually, Hali if he magically becomes better than he was before the surgery, or Kawhi having one more supernova burst in the next year or two. But none of those guys or their teams necessarily have the size that makes most MVPs, or the scoring and getting to the line abilities that end up being the difference makers for smaller guys like SGA. I’ll go with the Nets, who have the most draft capital of all these teams, and therefore the most chances at random luck.

Cade is just starting his prime, so at the moment he’s most likely. Haliburton, if he returns without missing a beat and gets even better in the regular season than the last time around (highly unlikely, sadly). Boozer has the highest potential of the players on all these teams, and could become a perennial MVP candidate. Scottie, Paolo… Don’t see it. Of course, I’m all for Derik Queen having a Jokić-like arc, but that’s even less likely.

Am I crazy to think Haliburton has a (small) chance at winning a Nash-style MVP? He hasn’t played since the finals run but he has a similar vibe with how he elevates the team while still scoring despite not really being a shoot-first player.

Pistons with Cade have a good shot. Tyrese returning to form is still probably unlikely, as his numbers simply don’t “pop” enough for individual accolades of that level. Zion, Paolo, + Scottie are talented/young enough, but I just don’t see it.
