It is made a lot more striking that the Connecticut Sun were a league success story in some very lean years and were mostly a success until they left. They sold out of season tickets in 2025 and in the 00’s and 10’s which weren’t exactly super successful for the WNBA they were one of the few franchises to not only be competitive on the court but make profits or take smaller losses.
The fact that there were competitive bids for the team from local area owners and they still let them leave is baffling the WNBA has plenty of expansion just expand a team to Houston?

Why not just promise them an expansion team? The WNBA is expanding pretty rapidly. I get it if there weren’t competitive local bids and hey this is just economics, but if local buyers were putting in just as good if not better offers to keep a team in a place where they were durably successful (as in the Sun were a really successful franchise in a long down stretch for the league meaning that it is probably smart to keep them around in case things head more downhill).
It seems like a bad business decision short and longer term and you have alienated one of your more passionate and dedicated fanbases who proved to be with you in the long run.

You know the threat of the Blazers relocating? This is just as bad and possibly even worse because the league colluded to make sure this team went to Houston.
The difference is one of scale though. Blazers have a vastly greater fanbase and one ingrained for generations. The Sun not so much. Sucks for Connecticut fans though.

Teams have different values in different markets, and we view those other markets as expansion markets. We just went through expansion in the WNBA,” Silver said. “We expanded to three cities. We ran a process that went for almost a year and cities came to us and said ‘Here’s our operational plan for how we’ll operate. Here’s where the practice facility will be. Here’s how we’re going to market the league. Here’s who ownership is going to be.’
“We ended up in Philadelphia, Cleveland and Detroit. Boston did not apply at that time for an expansion team and frankly neither did Hartford.”
Notice he says “we:” the NBA commissioner oversees WNBA ops as well. They considered the move to Hartford as a relocation, which is a laughable excuse to prevent a less-lucrative move.
That sucks. I used to go to Sun games. With the UConn women’s team just down the road, I guess the WNBA forgot how big women’s basketball is in Connecticut. That’s one of the few places they have with an above average demographic

Why not just re introduce the comets as an expansion team? League would get more in expansion fees and the North East has been a great hub for women’s basketball

I saw CT Sun on Sunday against Lynx at Mohegan Sun Arena, it was my first WNBA game, I wanted to see them before they relocate. The arena is one of the best I have seen, it’s not that big but it has an unique vibe. Obviously people there aren’t happy by how the relocation is going. Sad to see them go this way, WNBA wanted a fat expansion fee and blocked any move. What a shame.

Silver and the NBA forced the Sun to sell to Houston, where a current NBA owner wanted a W team, preventing the Mohegan Tribe from accepting higher offers from groups in both Boston and Hartford that wanted the team due to the Boston and Hartford groups not being headed by current NBA team owners. It is very heavily tied to the NBA.
