He also interrupted the Celtics’ long streak of championships in the late 50s. Underrated player.

He scored 50 points in the closeout game of the 1958 Finals. Still the most ever scored in a Finals closeout performance, tied by Giannis in 2021. He started his career the year the shot clock debuted, and he was still a damn good player when he retired in the mid 60s.

Bob Pettit was so dominant they literally changed how teams approached the power forward position. 11-time All-Star, 2x MVP, and the man who ended the Celtics dynasty in ‘58. Rest easy, legend.

Bob Pettit is an absolute top tier legend of basketball. One of 4 players to be on every anniversary team, and will continue to be so until the world ends. At one point was the leading scorer in NBA history. Very surprised how many people seem to not care as much because they “didn’t see him play.” It’s kind of interesting how it seems like newer fans are becoming less historians of the game. Not even saying that’s neccesarily a bad thing, just that fan interest with younger people seems to be more obsessed with the present, which is fine, I guess. I’m 29, and I remember being 10 years old, getting obsessed with the NBA, and trying to find every Pettit, Mikan, Russell, Wilt, highlight that I could, because I knew the league was what it is today because of those guys. Pettit is truly one of those guys that set the bar for what basketball and the NBA is today. Truly in a similar boat as MJ, Lebron, Kareem, Wilt, Russell, Mikan, Curry, Kobe, Dr. J, Magic, Bird, and Shaq, in terms of impact on the sport.
