This is surprising because it’s so rare, but Tatum kinda is the closest thing to LeBron since LeBron. A do-it-all forward that has the ball in his hands enough to score and assist and is an excellent rebounder at 6’9” or whatever he’s listed at. The Celtics, despite their talent, never really had some elite rebounder (Centers were Porzingis and Horford that season and he’s played with other guys who were simply undersized role players) or some elite playmaker who racks up a ton of assists (White and Holiday were fine but not traditional PG’s, and Brown isn’t as good of a passer).

It kind of has to be forwards that do this because Centers generally aren’t racking up assists unless you’re Jokic. And guards generally aren’t grabbing a ton of rebounds unless it’s one of those triple double guys (Luka, Westbrook, Harden), but most of them aren’t shot blockers either.

Tatum has the height to rebound and block, the skill to score and pass, and the defensive awareness to get steals. Most guys are not the complete package in this way. That’s why LeBron was so good for so long, he was unstoppable driving to the rim and could do everything else. If Tatum was a more efficient scorer, he would be in conversations for the best in the league, although not quite the physical force LeBron was and he’ll never be that.

That’s why all these bigger forwards are such good prospects like Ben Simmons, Banchero, Flagg, Risacher, now Dybantsa, because they have a similar build to be capable to do everything. It’s the perfect build in the modern NBA to be an athletic 6’9” forward because you have the height to hang with mobile bigs and the speed and length to hang with guards and every team tries to force switches. They are hard to attack defensively and on offense they can shoot over smaller players and often blow by bigs on the perimeter.

Tatum just also happens to be really talented and has thrived in the NBA.

Real people believe that Kyrie Irving deserved MVP over Bron in 2016. Bron obviously gets his love here, but it’s shocking how many people in real life do anything to discredit him. I do live in LA tho, so that may play a role in why I encounter so many of those people

ESPN ran a segment during that Cleveland series that basically asked what was wrong with Jayson Tatum, and then said he needed to be a lot better if the Celtics wanted to go far in the playoffs.
