How as a Knicks fan are you not going to understand the concept of the first option facing tougher defensive schemes (Curry, Brunson) and thus your second option isn’t guarded like a superstar and can be extremely efficient (KD, OG)? KD has always, always struggled with double teams, so it’s no surprise that his most efficient seasons on volume came when he was never guarded like a superstar.

Saying Steph “carried” KD is absurd, but there is a very good reason people say that Steph was more important/valuable/impactful.

I watched every game of the KD Warriors for obvious reasons. Our team was simply so so so much less lethal when Steph was out… but when KD was out, it was more or less business as usual.

I’ll always defend KD’s status as an all-time player bc he’s still clearly one of the greatest players ever and his scoring bag is a thing of beauty; but if you actually watched all the KD Warriors games, it was obvious which player was more valuable.

(PS – this was also heavily supported by stats. Our net rating and W-L record was dramatically lower when Steph was out – while those didn’t drop nearly as much when KD was out).

People correctly assess that Stephen Curry has a significantly greater impact on elevating a basketball team to championship-winning level than Kevin Durant does.

Yes, KD is incredibly skilled and physically gifted. Yes, he is one of the best basketball players in the world. But we have seen time and time again that a team with KD as its best player just doesn’t quite make it over the hump.

He doesn’t make his teammates better like Steph does.

Even with elite teammates like Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Steven Adams, Devin Booker, etc, the teams with KD at the top somehow manage to underachieve their “on paper” potential every single time.

The objective fact is that KD only won a ring when he joined an existing championship team led by the greatest shooter of all time, backed by the best defender of his generation, and supported by another elite defender and all-time-great shooter.

A team, mind you, which also won another ring after Durant left.

Yes, KD did put up ridiculous stats on those Warriors team, and “on paper” those stats look like the best on the team. But the fact is, he was able to achieve those stats because he was playing alongside Steph and Dray and Klay.

Not only was Steph Curry the best player on those teams, but in terms of impact on winning a championship, the next most important player was clearly Draymond Green. An argument could be made that KD might have had a bigger impact than Klay, but there is no world where he was better than Steph, nor more important than Dray.

Kd’s career may not be as good as stephs legacy wise. But to me he is a better overall player and its not close. It really does suck that he left OKC because i think if he stayed he couldve really cemented himself in the top 10 all time

The issue is the “bus rider” “bus driver” narrative as a whole. There are players who won a championship as the best player who aren’t better than some players who didn’t. And no, it’s not because of leadership or “problems” all the time, it’s mainly just circumstance. Just look at the injury luck of Durant’s teams compared to some others.
