It not always about more money. Sounds like he expected a bigger offer from the Lakers given his contributions to the team. They didn’t offer enough for him to think staying was worth it. So, less money plus proximity to family and friends in his home state was his choice.

Respect is an issue with the person / company you were already in a relationship with.

I totally get it. Houston also offered him a chance to “come home” and be close to his family.

If it was the same contract offer, CA income taxes 13.3% above \(1.49M and Texas doesn't have any state income tax. So that \)13M over two years is a difference of about $1.3M. You know how many more yachts he could buy with that money?

I think the aspect left out that easily explains the money side is Texas lack of income tax and California’s larger taxes.

LA was more but would have been gone to taxes or maybe it was incentive based and he didn’t think he could hit those highs.

Unless incentive based contracts is considered disrespectful I’d love to have him expand sometime but he’s probably saving that for after the League.

Without any context this doesn’t make any sense correct.

But, it most likely happened this way, Smart got Lakers offer first, which was “disrespectful” so he fielded other offers. He only took a lesser offer from the Rockets because of spite and didn’t want to play for an organization that “disrespected” him. So he took less money to be closer to his family/friends.

I get how he feels. You ever go to a flea market, see something you like, make an offer, and the seller says no? Out of principle, you walk. Smart probably feels he was underpaid so their offer should reflect his value but also include some extra due to his playing level exceeding his contact amount. Teams don’t think likes this though - they think they got good value out of him but they don’t want to pay for past value going forward
