There’s a big gap between 65 and 45-50. I’d guess it ends up where he takes his 61 million player option for 27-28 and then is extended for 3-175 or so (58.3/year). Closer to the 30% max rather than the 35% max.

He’s going to get a supermax extension soon enough. And for the record again he took the max at the time. He will recoup everything on the next extension.

There’s a huge difference between centers and guards when it comes to turning age 32-33.

If you go back and look at the contracts centers have been offered in the last 20 years or so, its very, very rare for those guys to get offered maxes. Shaq got one and by year 3 wasn’t worth it.

Duncan took a 2 year contract at age 33.

Dwight and Marc Gasol signed contracts at 25% of the tax level which lines up almost exactly with what Begley is reporting.

And those contracts are going to be an enormous barrier to their front offices building winning teams around them, is what the Knicks should be saying to KAT.

KAT is slightly older than all those guys, but even more importantly none of them are on a team actually looking to compete. This likely comes down to if KAT puts money over being on a real contender. He got a chip in NY, so maybe money wins this time, but I’d be surprised if any team with real championship aspirations also wants to pay him the full max.

There’s always talks of bottom feeder teams doing these huge overpays but it really doesn’t happen cause it’d be dumb. The only time it happened in recent memory was the 76ers overpaying for PG but at least they were closer to contending than the nets or kings.

It’s likely a similar ask that any team really trying to win will make. What contender is also going to offer KAT max money into his mid 30s? I’ll always be a fan for his for this past season, but that’s a ton of money for a unique offensive player who also has a fair amount of flaws who’s closer to the downside of his career than any expectation of improving.

KAT leaving doesn’t just open up $50m of cap space for the Knicks to spend.

At this point majority of teams understand that because someone is eligible for a supermax doesn’t mean they’re entitled to it. No team paying such a large percentage of their entire payroll to one player is able to win a championship in this era.

The problem though is that fans are making it clear that if he doesn’t take the biggest discount in sports history (not hyperbole), that he must not be serious about winning. By that logic no player has ever been serious about winning

There should be a smoother curve of salaries coming down from the max instead of a huge mode at whatever the max is because that more accurately matches the distribution of talent between players.
