I think you could maybe say they have similarities as scoring/combo guards but Brunson is so much better at being a PG while also being able to shift into a combo role that I think I’d rate it more highly than I do Mitchell.

“Eating his lunch” is a pretty significant overstatement. Brunson has absolutely had the better playoff results recently, and I’d give him the edge in playmaking and some aspects of efficiency. But over the last 5 years Mitchell has generally been right there statistically, and in several advanced metrics he has actually been ahead.

And both of those lists have Kawhi in the top 5 despite not making this top 10 list

Previously the dominant strategy was it takes too much energy to stop him, let Mitchell go off and stop everyone else, like the pacers and others did before. Which is why he has big playoff numbers because he is for sure a very talented scorer. But raptors actually played to stop him scoring and he had zero ability to adjust or do anything else useful on the floor when he can’t score himself.

He has never missed the playoffs, and he has been the most important offensive player from his rookie season. That’s something a lot of players can’t say.

Mitchell has had better teams, teammates, and coaches than other stars who have actually real excuses for never making the Finals, such as Damian Lillard or Carmelo Anthony

I wouldn’t say he was a better defender two years ago just because his defensive playmaking numbers took a hit. They’re still top of the league, just not historically great like they were then.

His three ball fell off but he took a pretty big two point scoring leap. He got to the rim more, improved as a playmaker, generated more rim assists, turned the ball over less, and took a huge leap when it comes to offensive rebounding

He was actually a better defender this year imo, his role just shifted. He was basically our only good perimeter defender in that year he was DPOY runner up, and Quinn basically told him to just cause havoc and play defence how he thought was best because the hawks really had no defensive infrastructure at that point.

This year we clearly had different intentions with him and Nickeil so he did slightly less havoc creation but I think he was a LOT better at containing drives and and stifling offence even if he wasn’t creating quite as many turnovers. Less steals, better on ball defence, and still the best defensive roaming in the league imo.

It creates the illusion of a young player, but realistically he’s still got more improvement to his game so it’s not totally off. Plus with him being an unheralded player I think he’s probably gonna try to improve harder than most guys who are his age because again they’ve been in the NBA they’re whole adult lives more or less.

In advanced metrics for last season LeBron placed very consistently in the low 30s, and that’s not accounting for his age, where age-related performance declines at an exponential rate. He has the capability to blast off, yes, but he’s not providing anywhere near the value of other guys in the top 10-30 range to a team.

Honestly I think AD when healthy is a better player right now too. Embiid is still a force of nature but his game has shifted a lot from his prime, he’s more contact averse, more perimeter oriented, and doesn’t have nearly the same mobility on defence. I guess we will see what AD looks like after yet another injury, but even last year when he did play he was still an elite 2 way player.

This Top 10 makes the most sense if you look at it as who is most likely to contribute the most – for lack of a better term and to use a baseball stat – WAR.
