The violence of football means its silly for any player to really try. Aside from injuries, just playing 1 game is much harder on the body. Doing so after the season is over makes it even worse.

Make it so that the 3pt shootout players are all at least in the top 10 for 3PM and 3P%.

The All-Star game back in Feb had a combined 8.8M viewers between NBC, Peacock and Telemundo. They’re not getting rid of the allstar game. It’s arguably the best all-star of the big 4 leagues. 

The Pro Bowl has always been a massive standout as the worst all-star weekend type event by a country mile. Nobody plays hard because the season’s already over for everyone there and they don’t want to risk injury given its football. Once it was moved out of Hawaii, players REALLY stopped giving any sort of shit. The NBA, MLB, and NHL all-star weekends and games never had problems to the level of the NFL with the pro bowl. At the very least, the aforementioned 3 had many decades where the games and events were very entertaining to watch.

The NBA All Star game at least has the dunk competition and three point contest. They really need to find a way to incentivize the Star players to participate though.

A pick up basketball game is still more interesting than a football game where nobody is playing hard or a bunch of football players playing recess games.

I think the Pro Bowl is worse. I think the Pro Bowl being at the end of the season when all anyone is interested in is the Super Bowl doesn’t help it (no I don’t know where else they should fit it in just an observation) I think the All Star break for both NBA and NHL is helpful for teams and players in the middle of a long season. I’d hate that go away more than the game and festivities tbh. Perhaps unpopular but I always find the skills competitions more fun and interesting than the actual game. Maybe keep that part if you’re going to talk about scraping the game itself?

I think at this point I just don’t care at all about the ASG. They could retire it or they could continue it. They could change the format or they could keep the format the same. I care about the season and the postseason and that’s really it. I like the in season tournament because it’s still the teams playing against each other. The ASG is just whatever to me. Let the players decide.

NBA all star weekend is a whole spectacle that brings money to the league and whatever city is hosting it. Not to mention all the celebrities that show up and side events/parties around the city. I don’t see them ever getting rid of it.

Its only a matter of time. The whole concept of All-Star games are a relic of the 1930s that should be allowed to die. The NBA should have been first but they will eventually do the same.

just put the players in madden, and have a long series of games that everyone can watch. Maybe even have top madden players fill out a top 16, and do an elimination tourney.

Nah. The All Star game just needs to be tweaked to give the players a reason to actually play hard. What we don’t want is the bad old days where it was literally 10 guys on the court playing shootaround with the odd dunk thrown in for good measure. That’s awful TV.

I watch probalby 50-60 regular season games a year and I haven’t watched an NBA all star game since I was a child. I’d rather watch the Wizards play the Pelicans.

It’s hard to compare the the two. The Pro Bowl happens after the season while the All Star Game is mid season. In addition, the risk of injury in football is much, much higher than in basketball and there isn’t really a way to minimize injury and keep the competitiveness unlike the NBA. If I have to choose between the All-Star game we get now and no All-Star game, I would choose no All-Star game but they are not the only options.

Of all the All-Star games in the major sports leagues, the NBA should have the easiest time actually having a relatively safe, competitive All-Star game.

Here is my 5 step plan to improve the NBA All-Star game.

1. Get rid of fan voting. Put the best 15 players (by position or using the Forward/Guard split they do now) on the floor. If you play for a team with a dedicated fan base that doesn’t mean you belong in the All-star game.

2. Stop giving every team a spot. If the player doesn’t earn it, he doesn’t go. If you’re the best player on a crappy team that doesn’t mean you belong in the All-star game. The same goes for decent players on a good team.

3. Focus on the game not the “fan experience”. The fan experience is something a relatively few number of people care about and half of them are celebrities who are at the game networking or being seen. I’m not saying do nothing for the fans there but the focus should be on the game.

4. Publicly shame players who give less effort than the 45 year old overweight dude at the Y. It’s a privilege to play in the NBA and especially the All-star game. If you want to pull a Paul George and complain about doing extra work, fans, journalists and even coaches should make them aware of just how little anyone cares.

5. Coaches should sit players who fuck around during the game. These players make too much money to care about fines but all of them have legendary egos. Imagine being the player who got benched in an All-Star game? That would eat them up inside and serve as a lesson to the others.

Frankly, I think the all star game has far more problems than the pro bowl. The main one being it’s a mid season thing which is just weird. Also it’s much less weighted to the best players and more the stars. Like, even if LeBron plays shit for the rest of his career, he’ll be an all star every year.

NBA won’t end it though, because the game is more profitable than the pro bowl, and generally players don’t sit out, they just give little to no effort. In the pro bowl players always sit out and just say they are injured, which I don’t blame them for tbh. Who wants to risk getting injured in a game after the season is over when you’re not making any (relative) money?

I don’t know about how Pro Bowl was. I’m not American, I gave NFL a shot and it was boring.

But I do think NBA is in this trajectory but it can be salvaged, it’s not total dogshit but it isn’t that relevant anymore. Just adding a few stakes like the return of East vs West or maybe introducing USA vs World can spice things up.

It might get there, but it’s not there yet. The biggest issues with the Pro Bowl were that players don’t want to play a full-contact NFL exhibition game, and that it wasn’t in the middle of the season so people had always kinda moved on. Moving it to the weekend before the SB didn’t really help much, and making it flag football just made it kind of a joke.

The NBA has more of a cultural issue where the players don’t think it’s cool to try. That’s fixable, theoretically.

I have a dumb idea for the All Star Game.

East vs West.

Each team gets to send one player to the game. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the best player. It’s who the team chooses to represent them in the game. This could make a competitive game just because teams will send someone who wants to play. Whole also giving every fan base a reason to watch.

The reward? Similar to baseball. Homecourt for the winning side in the finals.

Not enough? Each player/nba team put up 1m. The winning team takes it all home. So each winner takes home 2m. They can then choose to bring that back to their teammates or keep it all them selves.

We basically need to incentivise winning and discourage losing while bringing in players that want to compete.

Beyond time.

So a skills competition if you must.

I’m not a huge NFl fan. I am a cowboys fan (not by choice) and I’ll watch them every Sunday IF they’re broadcasting it free on local tv. I won’t go out of my way to pay to watch them. In all my years of watching nfl I have never once watched a pro bowl game.

I played this thing the other day where there were basketball hoops with all sorts of crazy backboards and I kept on feeling like it’d be really entertaining to watch top guys try to play it during the All Star game. Like, just find fun stuff to do. Skills competition is a good start but could be so much better.

Keep the game, but The trade deadline should be moved to the middle of the All Star Break.

I’m tired of seeing half rosters in the first game post deadline as players get flown around the country to catch up with their teams.

I think All Star Weekend is important. A break in the schedule, fans voting on favorites, a showcase of spectacle. I just don’t know if it actually needs to include an actual game of basketball, that seems to be where all the problems start.

I think the NBA all star game still serves a purpose the rules they are testing out there will likely make their way into the nba in some format especially the 4th quarter rule I could see them putting that in the regular season but not having it in the playoffs for example.

The dunk contest should happen once every 4 (maybe 2?) years to generate hype. The biggest flaw is that its hard to be creative building on the history of dunk contests so more time to create dunks + generate interest from the more popular players

Because there is no set place to host the NBA finals, the NBA All-Star weekend is the time the NBA has its big event celebrating the league.

The Pro Bowl was anti-climatic happening after the season was over. The All Star Game is in the middle of the NBA season and isn’t overshadowed by other NBA goings on.

And it gives a mid-season break to the players who aren’t involved.
