When he’s on a tear it’s genuinely must watch baseball, I’m clearly biased but I really think he deserves at least consideration for the hall, if not induction

I’m not saying he should make it or not, but his projections are getting pretty damn close to 500 HRs. And the only guys above 500 who aren’t in the Hall (excluding Miggy) are all connected to PEDs.
He’ll be a fascinating case for sure if he hits 500.
I think it’s a weird thing where everyone assumes 500HR is an automatic in because all of them are in, but we’ve also never had a 500HR hitter that wasn’t also great at other aspects of the game (or a PED guy), so it’s never really been properly tested. I think Schwarber is going to be the perfect test for it though, if he makes it. He’s got nothing going for him except those home runs.
Tbf to Schwarber, there are other parts he’s pretty good at. He walks a ton and is a smart base runner even if it looks funny. There’s also SOME value in that he was equally ass at like 6 positions when he was younger, so at least you could hide him. That plus his clutch and world series heroics make it a compelling case if he gets to 500.
If Howard had reached 500 instead of 382 (which Schwarber is about to surpass) I think voters would look at his case more charitably. He was definitely harmed by the lack of an NL DH in his era which forced him to play a rather poor 1B. His offense also just fell off hard past 31. Which isn’t exactly fair to him since he suffered a brutal injury, but voters aren’t the most charitable either. If injury history and “What could have been” were taken into account, then guys like David Wright or hell, maybe even Tony Conigliaro would probably be in the hall by now.
ROY and WS MVP are nice accolades to get but they can’t really make a HOF resume by themselves, unfortunately. It takes a really exceptional case like Mazeroski to move the needle with voters, I believe.
When he hits 600, it will be logical.
I’m actually shocked that Mike Schmidt didn’t accomplish that, but it looks like he had three 40+ seasons and then a whole bunch of high 30s.

Breslow and Bloom wince when they see guys who can hit home runs. Just hate it.
Always makes me sad to think what could have been if Howard doesn’t get injured on such a nothing looking play.

Well, let’s see. He’s a worse hitter than PCA, a worse baserunner than PCA, and instead of playing generational defense, he just doesn’t play it all. So no. Not even remotely close.
As a Phillies fan and Kyle Schwarber enjoyer, no, he has zero chance at an MVP, and deservedly so. He’s great for us at hitting dingers, but he provides no defense and strikes out a lot. Especially in a year with both PCA and Ohtani, zero chance.
Unless he goes on a hot streak and gets 60 home runs, probably not.
