The amount of playoff longevity Tatum already has gets massively overlooked
This is a product of being a top pick drafted to an already contending team. No doubt still impressive by Tatum, but it’s rare for top picks to immediately be playing in the conference finals every season.
Isaiah Thomas got shipped out so not the same team, but replaced with Kyrie so fair. Hayward went down immediately and was a non/factor. Tatum, Brown and Horford got to game 7 of the 2018 ECF all on their own. Once it was his and Brown’s team, they were doing the work and was not their drafted situation.
Pretty much every ECF trip they made was because of Tatum and Brown. Unless you want to give credit to Horford, Kemba Walker and Marcus Smart. Anyone else (White, Holiday, Porzingis) had nothing to do with where they were drafted, those conference finals runs were in years 5 and 7, plenty of time for any front office to be in a rebuild and build a contender. Luka was on a contender on the 2024 Mavs in year 6. Giannis was on a contender with the Bucks in year 6. SGA was on a contender with the Thunder in years 6 and 7. Jokic was on a contender in years 5 and 8.
Anything after 2020 is a moot point, and from 2018 and 2020 I’d love to know who you’d give credit to. They were good because of Tatum and Brown. We have to stop this narrative they only found success because of the team they were drafted to. The Jays would have probably been going to conference finals on any team.
Well of course credit goes to Tatum as well. My point was that the team around him was built to win and marked as contenders when he started his nba career. He obviously was a big part of elevating that team to multiple ECF and eventually finals and a championship.
But it’s very clear he wouldn’t have those playoff records if he got drafted to a team like Phoenix is 2017 instead of Boston. And likewise if Boston drafted Josh Jackson instead of Tatum, Jackson wouldn’t have those records even with a contending team because he isn’t nearly as good a player as Tatum.
It’s a combination of Tatum being a very good player + getting drafted to a contending team that he has those records.
We wouldn’t of been in those conference finals without Tatum tho your point is kinda mute he was starting on that team since drafted despite them being so stacked.
