Ballplayers tend to have their own vernacular for a lot of things.

First example to come to mind is what we would call ‘opposite field’ many players tend to call ‘backside’, but you almost never hear that term used by fans or broadcasters.

I’m assuming up/downs, which is a baseball term for a pitcher needing to ‘get up’ from the dugout. It’s usually used in relation to adrenaline management and workload, but in this case it sounds like he’s just using it to mean ‘innings started’. Guy had to throw more leveraged pitches which cost him innings of work and stats, bullpen needed to do more.

Usually you hear that in the context of relievers, especially multi-inning guys. Someone might only throw 15 pitches, but if those are split across one ‘up/down’ you might pull them earlier because stopping and restarting has it’s own impact on the arm and performance.

This is to understand in Puck: because I screwed up, pitcher got charged with a run, had to face two more batters, and lost his 5 inning shutout.

I’m assuming off context it means at-bats, as in “two more batters up”. Jobe got a pop out and a grounder fielder’s choice that scored a run the next two “ups”, which if he had held the runner at first, the grounder could’ve been a double play that ended the inning.

Someone explain “2 ups” to this graying baseball fan.

“Up” makes me think of batting (“You’re up, we’re in the field”, “Rodriguez up next, Raleigh on deck”), but that doesn’t make sense to me I’m this context.

As if “shut-out innings” are normal in any other context than baseball. Why do people react this way? It’s not like it’s hard to understand, the context clearly points to what the terms means. Reacting with anger doesn’t make sense either, just be a normal person and figure it out. Humans have been doing that for thousands of years, it won’t kill you.
