I used to think there was a chance but lately I highly doubt it. Being a two way player has massive benefits for a team, especially in the playoffs, but you have to be good at both. Not okay at one and good at the other. You have to be all star at the very least at both for it to be worth it. Jac had the highest chance because he was willing to do what others weren’t, which is get sent back down to build the other up. But it doesn’t seem like even he wants to do that anymore either. It can only happen in Japan because sending a player down and calling them back up will be in close proximity, but in America if you’re pitching and hitting at two different levels, the travel is likely impossible to even do that.

The contract situation starts for them wherever they choose, especially for players with potential like this because they a lot of them leverage their posting situation during the draft process for NPB. It’s a choice of developing in America or Japan, and either going through ARB or waiting for an agreement on getting posted to receive their MLB contract. Ohtani had he waited would have gotten paid at 26, Yamamoto at 25, Murakami should have gotten paid at 26, Sato if he is posted this year gets paid at 27, etc. Now for KBO there is a legitimate idea that it might be better to develop in America, but NPB is more than good enough now to want to develop there.
