Depends what the cause is and the manager-PBO/GM relationship is. It’s not soccer with formations but there are incorrect ways of using a roster. There is the Phillies and Red Sox of this year. On the flip side, the Mets and Orioles from last year can’t escape their injuries and poor roster construction so they are hanging around or below 500

Though your number is testable. For 40-13 in 53 games to be a 1-in-14 event, the club has to be a true .650 team — a 105-win talent. At .600 it’s 1 in 74; at .550, 1 in 589. So you’re not really arguing the Red Sox changed, you’re arguing they became one of the best teams in baseball overnight, which is a bigger claim than the one you’re criticizing.

The honest deflators are different ones: I picked the endpoints because the run happened, and Boston was ~6 wins under its Pythagorean on June 24 while Tampa was ~5 over. Regressing talent harder gets me to 1 in 424. That’s probably the fairest number.

we’d need to go down 0-x in every series and then win the world series on a walk off in game 7. We would also need the alcs to be against the yankees, and also probably the ws to be against the dodgers. that is pretty much the only combination of things that could possibly top 2004, and even then, an 86 year old curse being broken is not something that you can just do in any given year, and i think a lot of people would still look at 2004 more fondly

I think the 2022 Celtics should get some recognition too, as they are a pretty good analogue for what’s happening with the Red Sox. They were only 3 games below .500, so not nearly as big of a hole as the Sox, but also basketball and baseball are different.
