Prime Danny Green is the best example of a 3&D you can have. Although he could be very hot/cold from the three point line, he makes the right defensive plays to even it out.

He’s a spreadsheet demon. The guy who could have a positive +/- while going scoreless and missing seven 3s. 

One of the best transition defenders ever and a great rim protecting guard/wing, also a beast as a team defender. 

Also a 3PT bomber, great as a whole but he lived and died by the 3.

So many times this dude broke up 2v1 fast breaks with a timely block or deflection

I’ll always remember how good he was in that one Heat vs Spurs series, that pretty much is my main memory of him. So off that I’d say a very solid 3&D guy.

Danny was what folks might call a “glue guy.”

The guy the coaches rely on to do a specific job, not make mistakes, and let the superstars work on the offensive end. Takes his shots when he gets a good look, and might have a game every so often where he gets hot and gives you 25. But most of the time hangs in the high single-low double digit range.

However, he gives you 25-30 minutes of rock solid wing defense, which is hard to find, is good enough with the ball in his hands that he won’t turn it over much, and is athletic as hell.

One of the best role players in the league. Played his role at a star level.

Peaked as a good starter for playoff teams, so that means he was really good. Would be making 25 million a year if he was 28 years old in the nba right now

Danny Green was a very good, high end role player, specifically one of the better pure 3 and D wings of 2010’s. Not a star, not a borderline All star in most season, but an excellent fit piece who maximized what he was good at.

Danny was THE 3 and D guy. Basically invented the role.

He lowkey almost choked and costed us the finals but we won so it was all forgotten. Seems like a good dude though.

Khawhi gets all the credit but there’s a reason Green has 3 rings.

He was an elite 3+D player who you could plug in alongside anyone. One of the better catch and shoot players and deadly from the corner. Very versatile defender, could guard smaller players and forwards, underrated shot blocker. No surprise he won 3 championships as a starting guard on 3 different teams

My Dad, a lifelong Spurs fan, has always thought he was overrated.

Myself, a long tenured Thunder fan since their inception, always thought he was incredible, especially when he played us.

danny green is one of the best players in the history of the league. not like the best of the best, but a damn good player.

it’s remarkably difficult to find average nba stats on a player level. you can find things like average fg% or 3p% pretty easily since those are measured on a team level, but finding things like how many points the average player scored on how many attempts each season or how many minutes each player played on average is difficult, i’ve gone looking several times and never found a source that provides it. so i have limited ability to prove this, but i think danny belongs somewhere in the top 400-1000 players in league history. so roughly between the top 10-25% all time. he’s nowhere near the best of the best, but he’s a phenomenal starter that every single team would want on their roster in his prime.

he’s an excellent 3 point shooter who knows his role and doesn’t waste possessions on long 2s or other superstar shots. he defends at an extremely high level. he’s tall enough to play shooting guard or small forward, so it’s easy to slot him in to lineups that already have 1 of the 2. he’s tall enough and mobile enough to keep himself from being played off the floor. he only turns it over once a game, and he averages slightly more stocks than fouls. that’s a great player.

if we adjust our expectations from superstar level expectations (getting a bunch of PRA stats, winning awards, etc) to role player expectations, danny green is one of the best role players ever. he retired top 50 in made 3s on exactly 40% shooting. he played winning defense and made hustle plays. he didn’t waste possessions. he did everything the coach asked him to do without drama or controversy. and it worked. he won 3 championships starting every single game and averaging 25 minutes a game. that’s a fantastic fucking career.

danny green didn’t have great handles and he didn’t have a crazy finishing package. he didn’t score a lot of points. and you need someone who can do that on your roster to win a championship. you don’t win without kawhi or LeBron on your team doing it. but THEY don’t win without guys like danny green providing spacing and consistent defense. basketball is a team sport and not everyone’s role is to score.

He was a good defender with fantastic positioning, I watched him stop a tonne of 2 on 1s in transition. On offence it felt like he did basically nothing except jog baseline to baseline but he’d go ³⁄₆ from beyond 3 and call it a night.

He was a very good 3&D, like a poor man’s Klay. He had good defensive instincts and could defend multiple positions.

True Story: Danny Green scored 41 points on me when he was a freshmen playing JV because he was injured and on his way back recovering.

Bruce Bowen was the prototype 3-and-D guy that the league hated.

Danny Green was the 3-and-D upgrade that made every team in the league want one for themselves.

Probably the best fast break defender ever. Add in being elite at the role he was given and you have a guy that, while not a superstar, is a prime example of the caliber of role players you need to win a championship.

There was a moment in the 2013 Finals when he was shooting the lights out and a Finals MVP wasn’t out of the question.

Probably not even in the Hall of Very Good but, at his best, he played a very valuable role for an elite team as well as anyone could expect.

On the Raptors chip team if he was not shooting a 3 you just prayed he never touched the ball. The man had no ball IQ, no bag, a giant liability really. Many bench players contributed more to wins than his starting position. But then again that teams talent was so stacked he kinda stood out as a sore thumb.

If you needed a 3, he was always there. When you needed a stop, he was also there.

Danny knew his role very well, which is part of the reason he didn’t average more points. He wasn’t gonna force shots, but when you needed him to hit some, he was reliable. And he wasn’t just an excellent shooter, he was great off the ball also.

I’m still convinced if he doesn’t get hurt with the Sixers, they beat the Hawks and who knows what the hell else would’ve happened

He is truly a ceiling-raiser, and the perfect role player archetype. He also is much much closer to Horry than McCaw. One thing that isn’t mentioned enough is that he had a standout skill for which he was easily the best NBA Player I’ve ever seen: fast break defense. I’d love to find numbers on it, but he stopped more 2-on-1 and 3-on-1 opportunities than any other guard I’ve watched. He was an absolute savant at timing the strip or block in odd-man scenarios.

He was what his numbers say he was pretty much. Solid role player on a good team. Not as good as Caurso, probably a little above Sam Hauser. Different players but just to illustrate his level. Probably one of the first labeled as a 3-and-D guy but I would say a little below elite role player. Very solid defender, good shooter. If he ever dribbled, your heart would stop if he was on your team

But where does he rank on the all time list of Dannys?

He was also quite good on the ‘20-‘21 sixers who were the 1 seed in the east that year after spending consecutive championship seasons with TOR and LAL, respectively. Dude was just a winner.

A lot of historic 3&D guys were either not that good on D, or not that good from 3.
