It is wild to watch people completely misunderstand how the modern CBA works. Calling luxury tax bills pocket change to a billionaire ignores that the second apron is designed to kill roster flexibility, not just Lacob’s wallet.

It kills roster flexibility only in signing big name free agents. This would be a decent argument if the Warriors hadn’t traded Poole’s $120m contract for Chris Paul’s just to let it lapse and go under the cap. Millions, even 10s of millions, are pocket change for an owner. Had we taken the extra year of CP3, any number of teams would have taken that expiring contract, and we could have added another star. We chose not to for money reasons, not for a lack of flexibility.

Under the current rules, staying above that threshold freezes your future draft picks, moves them to the back of the first round, strips your mid level exception, and bans aggregating contracts in trades.

They are way over cap and Paul George's contract is as long as Jaylen Brown's was, he has a player option next year lol. They even worked out Mitchell Robinson for \)15m rather than start making moves to get under the cap. Their payroll is \(201m this year and \)219m next year, with the salary cap at, again, $165m.

Calling Lacob cheap is an absurdly bad take. The man paid historical tax penalties for years to keep the championship window open.

He was also making historic money off of the franchise. Warriors popularity in China and other non-American markets as well as the fact that the valuation went from 450m purchase price to 3.5b in 2019 meant those taxes were a drop in the bucket.

Only fans who cannot look past their own shadow think he pinched pennies. The problem was never his spending, it was the front office missing on crucial developmental picks during peak window years, leaving us with zero cheap, impact role players.

You can actually track how cheap the Warriors got by how much Lacob’s non-Warriors revenue fell. Today, Lacob is worth $2.3b and 2 billion of that is his Warriors stake. His non-Warriors money is literally less than he invested to buy the Warriors. He had a really rough few years and started pinching pennies because he was only worth hundreds of millions. His business failures outside of the Warriors in the last 5-7 years have been disastrous for the Warriors. But this is actually what stuck out the most to me:

leaving us with zero cheap, impact role players.

Bob Myers literally did better at this than any GM in the league, maybe ever. Barbosa, Livingston, David West, Zaza, OPJ, GP2, Belly, should I go on? He got us a ton of high impact players on great contracts, often minimum, and it was crucial to our success. He was literally doing it right up until he was gone.

Steph, Draymond, and Jimmy consume a huge portion of the payroll, so resetting the books, clearing off 70% of the cap, and building around young rotational depth under 25 is the only actual way to fix this roster.

That’s not fixing the roster, that’s waiting until they retire. There is no fixing this roster. That needed to be done several years ago, but we used our draft picks on bad players instead of as assets to build depth or get high impact role players.

No, it’s a pretty good assessment of the situation. Our owner tried for two timelines and failed. I’m okay with it, I’ve been a fan long enough that I never thought I’d see the Warriors make the second round, much less upset the championship favorites, much less become an all time dynasty. I am fine with the fact that the Warriors are irrelevant now, and I am content to watch Steph hit 3’s until he decides to retire. I’m just aware that we could have chosen to compete for a few more years, but Lacob just gambled wrong. It’s pretty obvious how we ended up where we are when you see Lacob quotes like this:

I did not expect, if you were to ask me 5-10 years ago, would [Steph & Draymond] be playing, and playing at this level with this level of health at 37 for Steph and 35 for Draymond, I definitely would not have predicted that. I would’ve gone with the odds and said probably not likely.

He was preparing for the end of the Steph era after the 2022 finals. I’m not even really mad at the guy. I remember the Cohan days. Lacob gave a sht more than most owners for a long time, and he made miscalculations and money moves after enabling us to have one of the greatest dynasties ever. I will always be grateful for that. But it doesn’t change that he shot us in the foot at the end of Steph’s career.

Yes, I agree, but it’s “slightly older” vs “two of our planned starters can’t currently run”. Injury risk aside, Curry’s game as a shooter will age well. Green will be useful off the bench for a bit longer. Butler’s useful if you can knock his cost down a bit. I’d say they are taking this path as a consensus direction from the key player(s), the coach, the GM and the owner.

I reckon they could make a move later this season or with the fresh cap space next season that is strong without mortgaging the future.
