His quote here is a really thoughtful and selfless way of presenting this. Rather than just deny it, he rightfully frames it as a way to try and make her the butt of a joke. He could’ve easily and understandably rolled himself into that too as he clearly was the butt of that joke too, but instead he just only focused on how this detracts from her legacy.
Unfortunately when many people think of Delonte they think of this rumor so he would be in his own right to be irate at how it’s overshadowed his legacy, but he only mentions her. Really profound.
I think you could expand this into at least 5 paragraphs of analysis.
And the reason the rumor persists is because people hate lebron.

Making jokes about it 15-20 years ago was fucked up but many of us were kids or teenagers so we get some version of a pass for being shitheads (especially since Delonte was in a far different place, still being an active NBA player at the time) - wasn’t okay, but should have been a learning moment for a lot of people. People who are still making jokes about it today despite knowing how Delonte’s life has gone are actively, intentionally being assholes.

Which is totally the way to go. Just look at the Ottawa Senators and how they handled the Linus Ullmark situation for exactly what you should not do.

I and many others were blissfully unaware of this… till the Sens put out a statement addressing it and pretty much gave the Twitter idiots an even bigger voice. Substance abuse disorder is a super common dual diagnosis with serious mental illness. Delonte has bipolar disorder which has no cure and people often self medicate to deal with the symptoms. Tale as old as time. The drugs aren’t the primary underlying issue here - the man just needs housing, resources, a strong social support system of friends and family, medication compliance (probably a long lasting injectable for him) and probably a case manager to check up on him to make sure shit is going well.
Even with all the supports lined up and with some strong buy-in from Delonte I fear it’s an uphill battle for folks in his shoes. Let’s all hope that we make medical advances to find more effective treatments for psychotic and mood disorders in the future.
