The people who just combat any opinion they don’t like with “you obviously didn’t watch xyz” just because the opinion is different contribute pretty equally to ruining conversations. It’s unassailable from both ends.

I personally use stats to help me assess the context I see when I watch games. If my opinion doesn’t 100% align with one or the other side based on it then it’s just brushed off by anyone involved. This isn’t just one group or the other ruining conversations. The discourse and how people engage with it is completely broken the whole way around.

You could actually prevent LeBron from scoring in those years by throwing a double or triple team at him because his crab dribble was kinda loose until he got to Miami. The shots he actually took were generally over only one guy which helped his percentages quite a bit.

Yea clutch has also evolved to include overall production in the final several minutes of close games. If you can take a tie game of a game while you’re trailing a few points and, through asserting your will, get your team into winning position so you don’t even have to rely on a last second shot, that’s even better. LeBron seems to do this often even if he doesn’t hit a game winner. He knows how to close the door on other teams.

I have said it for many years now, decades actually because I’m old, but Ray Allen was by far the scariest MF’er in basketball for an opposing coach to see get an open look for the win. For basically his entire career until Steph and Dame really came along anyways. I don’t think that VC gets ignored. TMqc showed an incredibly high ceiling and his career never really panned out the way it felt at the time, so it’s just one of those “what if” stories. Vince Carter is a hall of famer with a well established, successful career. He never hit the same highs as TMac, but his longevity was incredible. There’s just not as much mystique since we spent a long time watching him play, so it’s not as interesting to talk about.

If you simulate Jeff Green’s career 100 times, he ends up being a star in like 70 of those. Dude has been incredibly unlucky and hit development road blocks at every turn, yet still turned into a high quality role player with an incredibly long career.

Kobe is probably the best ever at generating himself a makeable shot. He had the size to rise up over hyperactive smaller defenders, the strength to put proper matchups on his hip, and the quickness and silky handle to get by bigger defenders. Just a perfect combination.

There are other guys that are fantastic at this too, but you can poke more holes in them than you can with Kobe at this really specific skill. There’s also a reason why like half of these guys are 6’4-6’6. It’s the sweet spot.

Edit: buzzer beating game winners at that, not just a shot made with time left on the clock because then he’d have several more.

young Kemba looked like he was on his way to this. just his first few years in the league (before he was an elite player in the league), he had at least three of these against Toronto, New York, Minnesota, and maybe another one I’m missing.

Once he finally broke out, Charlotte refused to get him a 2nd option, and every defense knew guys like Batum, Marvin Williams, or Michael Kidd-Gilchrist wouldn’t be trusted with a final shot and teams sent all their defensive attention at Kemba in the clutch and we went 0 for 1000 in close games for next 3 years under Clifford, running the worst out of bounds plays ever.

Lamb hit 3 game winners in 2019, Kemba’s last year in town, and Borrego’s first year as head coach.

He basically had 2 in one game - Game 4 vs the Suns in 2006. He had a difficult floating layup to tie it and send it to OT with less than a second left. Then hit a jumper as time expired in OT to win by 1.

There are so many gaps here from a data rigor standpoint:

What are you defining as a buzzer beater? Shot taken and no more time left on the clock? If that is the case, taking the possession down to 0 on clock is not the ideal outcome when your team is trailing. You want some time left on clock in case you miss so you can foul and get another possession.
What is your denominator? This needs to show the number of opportunities. If kobe hit 6 out of 50 and MJ was 5 / 8, that obviously matters

There are other issues too but these 2 are most glaring deficiencies in your analysis
