I keep hearing rumors he legit wants to play for the Celtics at some point, which you obviously hear a lot around star players (for instance how supposedly KD might want to play for the Wizards since he was from the DMV lol which obviously was never going to happen), but I’ve heard this from enough separate sources in my life that it feels at least somewhat real - he’s also the level of talent where he’ll get to call the shots on his career pretty fast - anybody know how real / realistic this is? My hope is the goofy Dallas owner screws things up so bad Coop wants to get out and comes home to Beantown, but always hard to turn down that rookie extension

He is never ever going to turn down a rookie supermax. Ever. Completely wipe that notion from your mind. What does happen for top end guys is they request a trade in year 7 or 8 and they always get what they want. Kyrie, AD, PG, Luka never asked for a trade but he still applies to that timeframe, etc. So around 2032ish at the earliest. But yes, I think he will eventually play here.

It’s way too early to say. Will the Mavs immediately give him the max contract he earns or will they try and get cheap, will they nor surround him with top tier talent and later in his career he decides he wants to leave.

We have no idea what the NBA will look like in 5-6 years. I think he probably does play for Boston at some point but not anytime soon that’s for sure

Even on his 2nd contract would probably be too soon. I doubt he’d willingly give up the 35% max he’s likely going to be eligible for on his 3rd contract if he stays with the Mavs.

By the time he could leave after his second contract he would be an 8 or 9 year veteran. He would need to get to become a 10 year vet to become a 35% of the cap max on another team… So he could sign a 2 +1 or 1+1 deal and opt out after he hits that 10 year milestone to then sign a 5 year max at 35% of the cap…. The difference would be overall marginal considering how much he would’ve made by then

For a young star player, the franchise that draft you can basically keep you for the first seven years. So it will take a while and a lot of things can happen.

That being said… he is not only from the area, his family and himself are huge Celtics fans.

If the Mavs are mediocre in 5-7 years and we are good I believe we have a shot.

Impossible to predict at this point.

We’d need basically all of these things to occur around the time that Flagg is a year or two from free agency:

A) Celtics have the cap space to sign Flagg/trade for his contract (and if he’s being traded, we’d need the assets to make a competitive offer)

B) Celtics have a competitive roster that’s appealing to Flagg (even if he loves the Celtics he’s not going to join unless he’s got the opportunity to win)

C) Mavericks fail to surround Flagg with a quality supporting cast

If all of that comes together, then I think our odds are good. He genuinely grew up a diehard fan, I’m sure he’d love to play here if the right opportunity arose

If Cooper and/or AJ look realistic, then A is a forgone conclusion. Those are the sorts of players you plan ahead for.

For example, Miami cleared their books a couple of times for Giannis.

Half the league cleared space for LeBron’s FAs during his prime. Regardless of whether they thought they had a chance.

In the years leading up, you just start offering short-term contracts with a team option to give yourself the flexibility.

If he decides he wants out of Dallas, which probably won’t be for at least 3 more years due to how salaries work, then Boston will be among the teams presumed to be on his wish-list, just purely based on how he grew up. But that’s just a small edge, not the same even as people wanting to go to Los Angeles or Miami because its LA and Miami.

Now, Boston will likely have a shot purely because they were will have 31-33 year old Jayson Tatum, so a disgruntled Flagg could plausibly want to join up with him to ride out JT’s prime.
