Most guys would probably find their name on the back to be corny so I’d go with the Wemby jersey unless he specified the other.

My preference would be:

1. favorite player on the current team
2. retired legend player from the team 
3. team jersey with no names
4. my name on it

if he’s a fan of the san antonio spurs he may like a jersey of tim duncan or david robinson…

edit: a rule of thumb i typically follow is never buying white jerseys (or trying my hardest not to, i am guilty of buying pinstripe baseball jerseys) as they’re obviously much easier to stain and for outfit purposes the colourful jerseys as opposed to white are easier to make outfits with/nicer to decorate with imo

Adult male here and the only named team shirts I own are with a player’s name, usually just one of my favourite players of the team at the time. In general that’s the tendency with regular adult fans I see, regardless of sports.

If he’s a spurs fan and often praises Wembanyama, I’d say the safest bet is the Wembanyama jersey.

A lot of comments saying to get a throwback jersey of Ginobili / Duncan etc which is a great idea of he has been a diehard spurs fan for years, but if he’s talking about wemby that would be my pick.

I’d also suggest getting it from somewhere that allows returns, just in case he did want a different player.

I’m in my 30s and am personally a believer that, at a certain age, a man should probably pivot to wearing team merch thats just a tshirt, polo, sweater, hoodie, etc., and leave wearing replica jerseys to the younger folks. You dont ever want to take style pointers from me, though. I love basketball but I’m a goober with an office job who can’t hoop for shit.

Personally, getting your own name on a team jersey seems too much like LARPing and feels kinda cringe.

Hey op! Wanted to give some additional thoughts:
First, hard agree with everyone saying don’t get his last name on it, get a player’s name. I think that’s a great idea on paper but in reality people don’t really do that. Here’s some info on a few players you could consider, since you might not know the spurs that well but you do know your boyfriend!

Wembanyama is absolutely the best player on the team and is generally speaking awesome and unproblematic. People seem to really love him in San Antonio so this is a great choice. The only downside is that this is by far the most popular choice so while it’s a great excellent choice, it’s also not a unique choice. That may or may not matter you your bf.
Dylan Harper is a young up and coming badass who I think fans also love. He was a rookie last year and it seems like he’s going to be really good. Probably not as good as Wemby but still awesome. This is probably the “I want a star player’s jersey but I don’t want the same one everyone else has” choice
Stephon Castle is probably the ‘indie’ choice. He’s also really good but he’s your classic “does the dirty work” type player. He does all the things that you need to win but don’t make highlight reels or win you awards. He’s tough, gritty, and really fun to watch, but also less celebrated than the other two.

Those are the only currently rostered players I would suggest. Other people have mentioned past players which is also an excellent choice. Here you probably would consider Tim Duncan, a spurs legend, definitely the best player in the history of the spurs and deeply beloved, or Manu Ginobli, also a legend but is most famous for always putting the team first, sacrificing for the team, etc

One thing you could do is reach out to one of his friends who he talks basketball with and see what they think? Def choose someone who can keep a secret though!

Just to be safe, get a Schroeder jersey. It’s bound to be for a correct team at some point

0 to 6 years old: okay

7 to 68 years old: not okay

69 to 77: a little weird but you do you, old man

78 to 120: you are by far the coolest person on the building

Don’t do either. Go with a legendary Spurs player. Gervin, Robinson, Duncan, Ginobili, Parker. Those are solid choices and they never go out of style.

I have a duncan and ginobli jerseys. went to a club in south beach, FL. 3 f**k bois (tats, vapes, backwards caps, chains) were all wearing spurs jerseys. I had never witnessed something so…off. like an evanigical pastor wearing a pro-everyone tshirt and pro-palestine shorts or something.

I would think he would like the wemby jersey more than his own name. I have never wanted a jersey with my own on it but i do have a brewers jersey with my last name.

I had gotten the brewers jersey for my dad passing, he was a big fan so last name and his birth year for the number. Plus an added patch on the sleeve saying in memory

At the end of the day I’d hope he would be happy either way getting a present vut get him the wemvy jersey

IMO this may be ok if said person played football and you get their number and what not but don’t be surprised if it doesn’t get worn outside of the house, I would always prefer a retired or active player.

I recently had this conversation with my wife. My sister’s husband showed up one day with a Dallas Cowboys jersey with his nickname on the back. I told my wife if she ever had the idea to buy me a jersey, please don’t get it customized with my name on on it. So i suggest you go with the Wemby jersey.

Getting your own name on a jersey is fine until you’re about 12.

He’s a Spurs fan it seems so i’d suggest getting him a Luke Kornet or Harrison Barnes jersey.

I guess I’ll go against the grain here and support using his own name, or even no name. I realize I’m in the minority here but wearing another man’s name on my back feels weirdly emasculating.

Only time I wanted a custom jersey was when I was in middle school early high school, and now I want one when my fiance and I get married to have a pair of custom jersey’s but besides that I rock my Brunson jersey loud and proud.

Always a team player. Custom jerseys should be for kids or for memes and that’s about it.
