Not a layup attempt. He was trying to dump it to McGee but Clarke saw the pass and got a deflection on it which caused it to pop up. Also the reason why it wasn’t a travel since it got deflected.

Idk if its a thing in the NBA, but in FIBA this wouldnt be a travel even without the deflection.
If you shoot the ball and air ball it, even on a lay up, you can still catch your own rebound as long as the ball went above the rim. It has to be a shot attempt tho.
Its was a pretty new rule 5ish years ago when I last played so there were a lot of arguments about it every time it happened. Everyone wanted a travel call haha

How was that not a defensive 3 second call on Jonas?!?!?! He wasn’t close to guarding Drummond (literally and figuratively).
When your man has the ball, you can camp out in the lane as long as you want. You just need to be within arm’s length in a guarding position. Remember, these guys are giants, so JV is basically two arm lengths away.
In practice, once a person starts dribbling, the timer is reset, so my first statement is the de facto state of affairs.
It isn’t that big of an issue nowadays, since a center who’s not guarded closely can set easy screens for a perimeter player.

JV used to own Drummond on almost every matchup, and they played a lot back when Drummond was a Piston and JV was a Raptors.
Drummond is a really poor finisher around the rim, so you mostly need to stand your ground and make him take a wild layup.
It was funny how much Drummond bit on JV’s signature fake shot.
Crazy how palming and Carrying don’t even exist anymore — they are both worse than travelling tbh. You still need good footwork and coordination to abuse the gather step.

Cavs Drummond had the ugliest offensive game I’ve ever seen in a pro player.
It was astonishing to see him draining 3’s for us last season (35.6%!) but his low post game was still cheeks.
Dark times. The Cavs sub forgets so easily. If we don’t get Watson 80% of those guys would be saying blow it all up. Some still are, I’m guessing.
Granted, that layup attempt was deflected but this entire sequence is a microcosm as to why Drummond’s value was so low toward the end of his Pistons days despite a couple all-star nods.
Grabs the uncontested defensive board and has guard Isaac Okoro leaking out into the open floor. Looks him off and opts to bring the ball up the floor himself in slow motion just for the feel of it.
Eventually passes the ball to Cedi Osman only to almost immediately receive the ball right back in a position where Andre was a negative threat as both a passer and shooter (22 feet away from the hoop).
Kind of a terrible set run by Cleveland anyway but Cedi springs open off a screen. It doesn’t even appear as though Drummond realizes he has four other teammates on he floor, he just stares at JV in triple threat like a statue. He pretends he was considering a dribble hand-off but he’s not.
Okoro cuts toward Drummond who by now has removed all false pretenses; he has zero intention of considering that pass. The shot clock is down to eight and Drummond has succeeded in ensuring that the team’s only option is for him to attack JV one-on-one.
He can’t find an opening off the dribble but he goes with it anyway. We can argue that he had McGee open if it weren’t tipped. But the ball was tipped… because reliably making plays like that is and has always been completely out of Drummond’s wheelhouse.
Drummond is then beaten down the floor by all nine other players.
Those were the types of plays you were getting from him a few times each evening at that point of his career (add in his low percentage backdoor bounce passes, taking off in the open floor with a live dribble only to meander into a double team, and his insistence on firing up these crazy 14-foot floaters). It was brutal. And it was why teams were performing better with him off the floor than on at that point, no matter how many rebounds he corralled.

That all being said, I give Andre a lot of credit for his growth and increased maturity. I’ve heard some interviews with him over the past couple of years and he’s alluded to the error of his ways at the time. He seems to have figured out his meal ticket since then (i.e. stick to his role and do it well).
