I want to have the Jaylen Brown trade womansplained to me. What would that look like?

Well, in both cases the player was extensively shopped and there was apparently no better trade partner to be found.

Sometimes the league at large just does not have as high of an opinion of players and their contract situation as we as fans do.

This is very much a possibility. It still surprises me that a good percentage of this sub, still doesn’t realize that we have one of the best developmental orgs in the entire NBA. Alot of fans here just assume a new player’s performance will be like their past, without thinking that we can bring out more from them than their previous team did.

I got really used to defending Enes Kanter because I thought he was an underrated and too-often scapegoated role player. He seemed good for chemistry, too.

I also remember rooting for Curt Shilling at one point.

My impression is that he’s more a useful idiot of the grifters than an actual grifter.

I think his heart was originally in the right place with the Nike/Uyghur stuff, but it just came right at the same time that his game fell of a cliff and some conservative opinion makers saw am opportunity to manufacture a martyr and roped him into their echo chambers.

This new WNBA stuff is a complete sideshow and does a huge disservice to all the real human rights shit he cares about, but it’s also transparently a coordinated publicity campaign with some real money/organization behind it. I could be wrong but I’ll bet $5 he’s not the creative director behind that.

Similar to the c’s 2024 super team, the sixer’s super team will need their version of jrue. Honestly, they might even need an Al (starting level player going to the bench). The problem for the sixers is that these players are at different points in their career and they have wildly different strengths/weaknesses compared to the c’s super team. It’s not obvious who/how the players will sacrifice, especially on the defensive end

I’ve been on the Paolo will get traded train for so long now and ORL keeps kicking the can down the road. It’s starting to feel like they are too stubborn to rip the bandaid off of this Paolo first option experiment. Maybe they’ll never give up on Paolo at this rate

I’m Lucy and the football with Orlando. I get Paolo’s a super flawed player and he’s never going to be very efficient, but he has caused problems for teams in the playoffs. They won 47 games a couple years ago without Bane and they were probably going to beat Detroit if Franz hadn’t gotten hurt. I don’t think 50 wins and winning a round or two is outside the realm of possibility for them if Wagner and Suggs can stay healthy and the new coach finds the right alchemy

This exercise got me thinking, who has the worst bench in the East and will struggle with the regular season? Even the Knicks who I’d argue got more bench production than usual didn’t have a particularly impressive bench and that’s why they aren’t winning 55+ games.

Just at a quick glance, I hate Miami and Cleveland’s benches the most.

Yeah the Cavs are weird.

The analytics suggest their big 4 are the only guys really making a positive impact, and that 4-man lineup had a +26.7 NET Rating. However, when you watch them together, their main players just don’t do enough.

2 are being hidden defensively (Mitchell / Harden), and 2 aren’t doing much playmaking-wise (Mobley / Allen).

Those 4 guys can work individually, but they all need someone to help cover for their deficiencies. In the ECF, Schroder and Strus were taking on the toughest perimeter assignments and leading the team in APG.

Interestingly, that 4-man lineup of Mitchell, Harden, Mobley, and Allen didn’t really play as much together as you’d think. It was their 9th most used lineup (looking only post-trade). They staggered those 4 a lot and almost always seemed to have 2-3 other guys in the mix to spread things out.

For comparison’s sake, if you look at the 2023-24 Celtics, our top 5 most used lineups were just variations of the starters, and then the next 3 included Horford in one of those spots. For Boston the 9th most used lineup was where we started to see role players come into the picture.

I assumed Klay is going to start? IDK if that’s right or not, but they go with Tim Hardaway Jr. then that figure goes up slightly to +8

Surprised by the Toronto outcome though. I have been kind of ignoring them even though people were like “but Kawhi!!” but this is actually giving me pause. Didn’t really think CMB would be ready to play over Poetl yet.

And Indy is going to have growing pains I think. They’ll be better in the 2nd half of the season, but in a competitive East, that might not be enough. Don’t think a Celtics ‘22 or Hornest ‘26 run will be possible this season.

Also, I agree with your spoiler alert. Unless Orlando has a transformative change to their play, Paolo is gonezo.

Assuming that Tatum is back to himself physically, maybe something like 28/8/7 on 58-60% true shooting. I’m hoping he’s able to average the same amount of free throws in 2023 which was 8, cause if he can do that he’ll probably average 30.

I didn’t watch the sixers that much last season, but both Pg and Pritchard averaged 17 points with Pritchard averaging 2 more minuets. I do think Pritchard works better with Tatum compared to jb, but we have yet to see pg play with Tatum and I don’t see why that couldn’t be a good fit. I would probably go with Pritchard since he’s able to get to the rim more consistently compared to pg at this point of his career

In the Jaylen brown presser, Brad made a comment that in the new nba “you can’t have that much cap space and usage tied up in two players” and i think that’s a huge sign that Tatum is not going to see a huge usage spike. My guess is that he stays right around ³⁰⁄₃₂% like he’s been his whole career, and if there’s any big bump in his responsibilities it will show up in his assist rate not his usage rate.

Beginning in ²⁰⁄₂₁, the first season this was unquestionably the Jays team, the Celtics have had about 60% usage tied up between the top two players. Most of the time that was an almost even 30%/30% split between brown Tatum, but the interesting thing is that last year without Tatum the 60% number didn’t change - but the split became a 37%/23% split between Jaylen and D White.

Looking at the last four finalists, that top two players usage split in the playoffs went:

• 26 knicks: 52% (32 Brunson/20 KAT)

• 26 Spurs: 57% (32 Wemby/25 Fox)

• 25 Thunder: 59% (33 SGA, 26 Williams)

• 25 Pacers: 47% (24 Siakam, 23 Haliburton)

I don’t expect us to go full pacers, but i think the aim is to keep Tatum in that 28-32% usage range and then have a handful of players right around 20%, putting the top two usage players at around 50-55% combined.

So to answer your second question- no I don’t think we have another 20ppg scorer but I think George/white/pritchard all end up in the 15-20ppg range

Given the health concern, I think the team and JT have already discussed the (ideal) 10-12 “maintenance” games he will miss. What they decide has a large bearing on what his stats and/or usage ends up.

Is the (ideal plan) skipping any of the same games as PG? Those would be labeled ‘scheduled losses’ and if the team decides to play it like that, it’s likely against high-end Western Conference competition (OKC, SAS, HOU, etc.)

Or is the (ideal plan) staggering JT and PG’s absences, to have at least one in every game? There are no games anymore against an obviously tanking opponent: the Bulls and Nets aren’t good, but they aren’t trash and there’s no incentive for them to not try.

I’d personally schedule some losses but the team won’t. Which would bump Pritchard’s numbers up as the primary scorer, and raise everyone else’s season averages.

The team will likely stagger JT and PG’s absences. Which will greatly affect both PG and JT stats: each will have 10 games as “the Man” and a majority of the scoring responsibility.

Overall, I expect Tatum’s assist numbers to go way up with his usage settling around his already-established career high. And I really expect that when PP, PG, and White play with Tatum, they are going to embrace the idea of no one being a “ball stopper”. Swing, swing, swing.

It’s tough.

His peak was 32.7% in the season he averaged 30.1 PPG, and he handled that relatively well. The numbers might also suggest we’re better when his usage is higher.

But at the same time, you saw and responded to the comment below about his health. We’re all worried about what might happen to him with an increased workload. Tatum has been injured every time Boston has been eliminated over the past 4 years.

We also really want/need other guys stepping up offensively, which should eat into Tatum’s opportunities. We don’t necessarily want to be a team with a single offensive workhorse. Brown did a great job stepping up and carrying a heavy burden to help cover for other guys, but ideally those other guys will be ready for a bigger role now.

I’m debating whether PG or PP can, i doubt d white can

George: I’ve seen a lot of people linking George’s numbers without Maxey this season. You can have a look yourself (via databallr’s StatLineShift). He had a massive jump in both volume and efficiency. However, it’s a really small sample size, and also databallr’s a bit janky in terms of getting the total minutes to match what thsoe guys actually played.

Over 2 seasons the numbers suggest he might be slightly better, or he might not be, it’s hard to tell.

Pritchard: In the past I’ve compared Pritchard to Brunson in the sense we knew he was a better scorer than the numbers suggested. He was consistently stepping up when given the opportunity. He averaged 9ppg for the 2023-24 season, but he was a 17 ppg player every time we let him off the leash.

This past season was a little different, because he did have plenty of opportunities, and we didn’t see those same signs.

He does play better with Tatum than Brown, so we might see him flourish a little. He is also a workhorse coming off a year that could have been better for him. So we might see that jump, but I don’t have the same confidence.

White: I agree.

In theory he could easily hit 20 ppg just by returning to his shooting averages, but I also think we’ve seen he’s somewhat limited as an offensive player. I think he’s a better player when the scoring is a luxury vs a necessity, because he does disappear quite frequently.

Right now he’s the poster boy for why you can’t blindly extrapolate efficiency stats.

And that’s okay. His strengths lie elsewhere.

Scheierman/Walsh/Gonzalez/Harper: You didn’t mention them, but I think them taking an offensive leap is more important to our success. If we had to inject 3 ppg into someone, I would rather one of those bench wings than the 17 ppg guys. Those bench wings are so important to our brand of basketball, but it doesn’t mean much if they’re unplayable in the postseason because they’re non-factors.

i’m very curious if he plays b2bs anymore in his career, i assume so if fucking KD can at his age.
