Shame either he or the Bucks second option have had some injury issues since he won it, heck his knee bent backwards in that run too. Khris slipping on a wet spot in 2022, getting undercut in midair by KLove in 2023, being healthy all season then having his first calf injury in April 2024 before the playoffs, then Dame achilles and blood clot issues in 2025. Don’t think they had a chance in the latter years due to coaching and personnel but the 2022 playoffs really was a missed opportunity

MVPs are weighted much, much more heavily than DPOY in rankings. There are plenty of DPOY that aren’t in the HoF, but so far Rose is the only MVP not in. As far as Bird and Magic, Bird had a higher peak while Magic had a little bit more team success thanks in part to Kareem, someone who ranks higher than both of them. That’s why it’s considered a bit of a wash.

I think it’s the eye test. Giannis plays with power and the force of a thousand suns. Similar to Westbrook. They just barrel into you. Overpower you. Throw it down.

It wins games but it doesn’t win opinion.

Jokic has a butter shot selection and is in rare air for all time passers. The general fan will rank that higher than a locomotive player.

10 spots??? That’s insane lol they are pretty much right in line with KD in that 15-25 range. I think jokic is better but 5-10 spots is not reasonable. Im a big fan of joker but I do agree that Giannis has gotten pushed aside because of his injuries and just generally because of media fatigue.

Jokic has had a longer tenure as the best player in the world, and took that title from Giannis. It makes sense that, despite similar accomplishments, people see Jokic as a clearly greater player. With that said, I don’t think you can separate them by much. I’d have them both somewhere between 20 and 13 all time, similar level to KG/Dirk/The Admiral/KD/Jerry West/Oscar.

They both have the potential to separate themselves from that pack with another ring, but I doubt either will do so.

Have you seen joker stans? They are the closest to steph stans here. Dark horse is sengun fans. They really want to convince ppl hes the next bird. But they have to hold it for now 

The best ability is availability and Giannis being injured twice on recent playoff runs as well as missing half of last season has dulled some of his shine in recent years.

Tbf jokic was having the same playoff success while playing in a loaded western conference with Steph and Lebron not to mention some solid clippers teams and Luka. Giannis was getting knocked out the butler heat and some premature celtics teams.

Jokic has six top two MVP seasons (counting three he won) and plays most games.

Jokic is a better player. Makes teammates better, passes better and plays more

Jokic is just a more unique player than Giannis.

Because offense is more important than defense and Jokic destroys Giannis in offensive value stats.

Voter fatigue did not affect him, advanced statitis affected him. If the voters were actually watching the games and how much he had to carry then he would have been top 2 (or top 1) in MVP voting much more frequently.

In all the seasons that embiid was ahead of him, giannis had more impact (save from maybe 1), but just because his style of play did not inckude fishing for fouls (and admittedly not being as good in scoring from the line) would land him 3 or 4 in the mvp ranking with embiid ahead.

For example in the year embiid won the MVP, giannis had basically identical stats but also lead his team to first overall while missing his no2 for the vast majority of that season. Historical season, better than any of his other mvp seasons.

But because he had to carry more weight he was slightly less efficient so miraculously ended up 3rd in that run.

First time in history that the clear best guy of the 1st seed that loses to a lower seed from the same conference.

I don’t think that such a mistake will ever happen again.

If people were voting with actual impact and not adv stats he would have had had 3 MVPs same as Jokic and Embiid 0.

So, no, it was not fatigue, it was (imo misinforming) stats that kept him from more personal accolades.

Although technically it is a decade (10 consecutive years), historically when players or teams have been ranked on an all-decade list, the last digit of the year when the decade began started with a 0, e.g. 1950 or 1980 for the the best of the 1950’s or 1980’s, etc. Same thing with music, movies, etc.

He was the consensus best player in the world in 2022… in this sub, in the surveys, on freaking 2k lol. Not sure why revisionism happens with that. The player who came up in the discussion most after that season was Curry. Jokic probably became the true consensus after the season he won his title, until 2025 when the discussion was with him and Shai, and then Wemby

Jokic is brilliant, elite player. I think it’s all about preference at the end of the day. Some people value defence more, some value assists or shooting, accolades vs influence. There’s no wrong answers with players this good imo, just have to be grateful we have so many elite (and different) players in this era

Giannis’ stats in the last 10 years are better across the board against teams in the West, compared to teams in the East…

Shift the time frame by a few years earlier or later and then you capture a different cohort.

…Of course if you look at different data, things are different. Brilliant. But ‘today’ as an anchor point isn’t ‘arbitrary’, and a decade is a common unit of time.
